I had to slow down in order to get the speedometer needle out of the way.

I was zipping along at 65 mph, which obscured the odometer.

Not bad for an original owner on a daily driver, eh?

I just put on a set of new rear tires. ($374)

Unfortunately, I also found the rear axle seals were leaking. $685

And, my EATC control head went out (No A/C, No fan ... nada.)

Dealer said the EATC head was about $600+. I'm wondering, can anyone here give me an idea of how hard it would be to pull one out of another vehicle and put one in myself? If it requires dismantling the dashboard, then I'll probably let them do it.

Congratulations!
At the rate I'm going, I'll catch up to you in about 10 years...
The EATC replacement is a 1 hour job or less; get a shop manual.

Congrats:D You could have brought it up to 120 MPH to get the needle out of the way. :D Just kidding.

if you buy the EATC panel, be sure to get the 2-pc kit that includes the unit under the hood as well, they fail as a pair in many cases, and are more expensive seperately.

oh and congrats, I hit 110,000 last week.

Congrats on 100k, I'm about 5-6k miles from there myself which will happen in the next few months sadly. She's growing up so fast in front of my eyes lol.

tell us more about the eatc symptoms. it could be a leaking vacuum seal, which is repairable. there are instructions on here. also, you can check ebay to see if any come up for sale - marauder/gm, cv, lincoln, etc - these others might fit also, if from same model year.

It had the symptoms of a vacuum leak at first, which I wasn't too concerned about initially.

The A/C went to full defrost and only by backing down the fan or waiting did it come back to the vents eventually. It also did it when the throttle was engaged heavily. Definitely vacuum-leak symptoms.

Unfortunately, the entire climate system went dead next. The fan will not blow, neither the buttons on the dashboard or the unit on the steering wheel makes any difference. You can still feel cold air is in the vents, but nothing comes out now. It does still show the outside temperature, which is nice.

The dealer ran a diagnostic on it and said a portion of the EATC control head had failed causing the controls to stop functioning. Since it was a sealed unit, the entire unit must be replaced.

I am tempted to just fix the vacuum leak and then hot-wire the fan to permanently "on" and see if that restores enough A/C function that it won't bother me anymore.

For the time being, until I can make up my mind or find some extra cash in the budget, I'm just parking in the underground parking garage at work and driving with the windows down. That should work until about mid-June at least.

Honestly, I think you can buy the part and change it yourself. It is super easy to do. From what I remember, just pull the fake carbon fiber panel strip off. Remove the screws that hold the HVAC unit, unplug it and plug in the new one.

Very easy and should take 30 min if you have never done it before. 5 minutes if you did it even once.

call a salvage yard for the part. they are usually only about $20-50 so you can easily do it yourself. i know, i used to work aty one;)

It's going to be roughly another 20 years before I hit 100k. But I probably will have to stop driving it before then when gas is $20 a gallon

my local phord dealer recently serviced an Aviator with 540k on it. (in for its 18th trans fluid change or some such typical servicing).

so since the engines are so similar, I'm not too concerned...

yeah but mine has 51,779 on it right now as we speak and i just ahd to go in for ticking. the crank bearing and oil pump had to be replaced due to knocking. previous owner musta have raced it or something.

its all in who owns the car and some engines are just duds.
