View Full Version : Brake Pad Longevity

My 2003 Marauder has about 65,000 miles without needing any brake work. The car has the original brake pads front and back. Someone else on site has over 150,000 miles without needing any brake maintenance or repair. My dealer said I may be able to go 100,000 before needing to change any pads.
What are other owners' experiences in needing or not needing any brake work?
Thanks

You can stretch it as long as you prefer, but I like to think about changing mine when there is less than 50% of the original pad left. As the pad material gets thinner it heats up faster, fades faster and is causes the rotor to get hotter. The way I drive they run between 20k and 25k miles before I change the pads and rotors - front and back at the same time.

I drive pretty quietly most of the time in my MM. I have 54k and my pads and rotors are still quite good.
My S-10 went 120k before needing new front pads. Never changed the rears in 160k miles.

My OEM rotors warped around 35k. So I had them turned and new pads put on then. Now I am at 65K now with 3/4 life left on the pads. But I do drive it like I stole it. Hard on the gas and hard on the brakes.

I got 22k to the OEM rotors. They were badly scored and extremely warped at that point. The pads were fine but I chucked them. If you guys are getting 100k miles to your brakes you probably should be driving lincoln town cars.

I have 170K on my OEM's and still have a lot of pad left!!
The trick for me was to have 2 sets of front rotors and turn them as soon as they start the dreaded "Ford Pulsing"!!!
Ironically, I ordered all new rotors and pads today....can't wait to try and get the rear rotors off!!!:shake:

I believe that I have the worst but done by the previous owner.
Fronts were 2/3s gone @ 14k.
Rears (especially the inner right pad being near paper thin) changed @ 9k.
Oh, the 3rd brake light bulbs were burnt out and the tint is still bubbled from the heat damage.
I now have 48k and my rears are near new and my fronts are 60%. Not bad for 19k takeoffs installed @ 14k. I have no clue when I will br installing the CVPI pads when these are done. Rotors were swapped recently due to warpage with OEMs that have been cut once.

I flushed the brake system @14k and still have great pedal feel.

I'm impressed by all those double digits and tripple digits infront of that little "k", like 14, 23, 54 or 150  . I'm hoping to get 9k

CVPI pads? Will these fit on our cars? Are they better?

I have 59000 miles OEM pads & rotors with 50% pad wear left. I do plan on changing the front rotors to comand cryo pads to hawk hps. I ordered the pads almost a month ago at AJUSA. they still have not arived.

Hi all,
When I hit 90K I started to get concerned about my front brake pads. I checked them out and they had a few thou left. When I hit 100K I really started to get concerned. At just under 102K I changed the front pads. I could have waited. I still had 5 or 6K left on them. I do tend to be easy on brakes, though. When riding with my father I feel like he is waiting too long to take his foot off the gas and then has to hit the brakes harder. Just his style of driving.

My brakes squeak terrible. I'm only at 20000 miles.
Could just be a squeaky brake pad though. I'll check when I switch over to my summer tires.

I'm coming up on 40,000 miles (I have 62,000 km), and will have to replace the pads, very soon. Under anything more than moderate braking, I see the brake light on the dash pop on for a few seconds afterwards. I'm not losing fluid, so I attribute this to the wear on the pads. I have a fresh set of Akebonos ready to go in (within the next few weeks)...

That is not at all normal. We do not have brake pad wear indicators like an Audi, etc would have.

There is a float and a switch in the master cylinder that monitors fluid level - too low and you will get a light.
