Well Today I just Picked my car up from the shop. They installed
KOOKS long tube headers - high flow CATS - X-pipe and magnaflow mufflers. I MOST DEFFINITLY notice ALOT more POWER from the KIT. The high end POWER I gained is just CRAZY. !!!

But I am not happy with the Magnaflow mufflers. It just isn’t loud enough for me. It sounds good when I get on it but in park when I rev it I am not happy with the sound. (I like that deep loud sound)
So today I ordered Spin Tech Mufflers. My friend has them on his 96 Impala and they sound wicked and there very loud!!!! I hope they achieve my need for a CRAZY loud exhaust...! :)

O and once the Magnaflows are off i will be selling them...

You have no idea how loud the car really is until your friend drives it while you stand in amazement.

I had my next door neighbor drive it down the block and get on it so I could stand behind it and listen. It was most definitely very loud and much louder than stock and it sounded really good but not loud enough for me. I no I am crazy but I just want louder. :shake:

Get yourself an H-Pipe instead of the X you have and the sound will be much deeper and rumble better......X-Pipes are very high pitched and raspy....IMHO!!:cool4:

H pipe #3... and your mufflers will growl with age.

Don't know if this is relative to Magnaflow, Spin Tech or mufflers in general...but there maybe something to this because I know my Super 40's are DEFINITELY ageing nicely and sound really great this year (2 yrs old).

I swear they picked up some more rumber after i Seafoamed Smoke a couple weeks ago...

My next upgrade is mid's or longs and an H for ****zle....

I have long tube headers, custom 2 1/2" exhaust, x pipe, flowmaster 40 originals, and res. delete tips. My exhaust is LOUD, and aggressive. The flowmaster 40's are the main cause of the loudness.

I never liked the sound of Magnaflows.

+4 on the H pipe...

I've got the same system as you bigbillybbs, and the X pipe makes mine sound almost like a Ferrari when I wind it up.
It's a cool sound and I like it, but I would've preferred the deep, muscle car sound of an H pipe.
Swapping out the X pipe is not an option, as my entire system back to the Magnaflows is Jet Hot coated...:(
I'm now considering installing my 4" MEGS (delete) tips to see if it deepens the tone.

Get rid of the X-pipe and have an H-pipe installed. I went through the same thing as you. I hated the high pitched sound of the X. I lived with it for almost a year and finally this spring I had an H installed. What a difference. It's got that big block sound again. Above 3000 RPM it sounds like a Boss 429. It's actually louder now than with the X pipe.

My 14 inch Magnaflows were very quiet when first installed. After a few weeks they loosened up a good bit. If you drive your MM every day, wait a month, then reevaluate the sound. Then spend the money to have them changed.

I like my exhaust to be quiet at times, and loud at times. 14 inch Magnaflows were a good compromise for me. I ran mufflerless for six months or so, but it annoyed me about 30 percent of the time and was droney on long highway trips. Several of my local MM buddies still run muffler-free but I think for most of them the MM is a weekend fun car.

Just my opinion. It's your pockets the money comes out of and you are the one that has to be happy with the sound. :)

+5 on the H-pipe.

Since the Kooks and SW LT headers kits do not come with an H-pipe that is the main reason why I have not bought them yet. Yes I know I could get a custom one done and that's what I'll end up doing now that I have come across an exhaust shop that understands exhaust bending and to maximize the most power out of a exhaust system they make.

H-pipe = throaty sound and down low torque
X-pipe = pulsey sound and high end horsepower

A lot of drag racers swear by H-pipe just as Nascar racers swears by X-pipe. A lot of it has to do with where the equalization crossover pipe is placed. The closer it is to the engine the better it will scavenge the exhaust.

Hey big billy what shop did you get the work done at? Always looking for good shops on long island.

I live right next to KOOKS they are maybe 25 minuets from my house so I bought the headers directly from them. I went to Kaltech Tuning and Performance. They are two awesome guys who do great work. I am VERY happy with there work. They took there time and maid shore everything came out great. They kept my car for 2 days. If you go to there sight and call them they will give you a quote.

Why waste more money and time on mufflers, lets get crazy and just replace them with straight pipes. The cats should be just enough to muffle the sound.
This should get you your CRAZY loud exhaust!

I am going to see how my car sounds with the Spin Techs. If it still isn’t loud then I am going to do the delete tips.
If that still isn’t loud enough then I might go with MM BKK idea and go straight pipes. HAHA..

Simple solution is no muffler, I had a rusted out muffler/exhaust on my Mustang and I would set car alarms off driving through the University parkade.

Cool but too loud.

I also do not like the X pipe sound.

If not so many people like the 'X' pipe, why does Kooks offer only the 'X' Pipe and not an 'H' ???

Is there some other benefit to the X over the H, such as better gas balance, better fow?

Sound aside, what are true perfomance differences? Benefits of 'X' vs. Benefits of 'H' ?

mmssdriver
06-06-2008, 08:37 AM
from the research ive done and the knowledgeable sources ive talked to, a "true" x-pipe (which is A balance pipe) will flow smoother and more efficiently and effectively then A H-pipe. Sorry but ive lost the links to the websites to back up my research to prove this. If you do enough searching on google at reliable websites you'll find your answer..

keep in mind... Crackly sound is turbulence.. turbulence isn't smooth flow. smooth flow inst necessarily loud..

Frankly, I don't care whether it sounds like a Farrari or a 429 Boss, I just want it to perform. (like either one would do nicely)

The prelude: I like the sound of the H-Pipe, low and rumbly. I got the Magnaflow 18's to keep/enhance this sound. I'm happy with it. Res-delete tips are on the way (same sound louder, as I understand it). I hear x-pipes give more performance. I also know they provide a higher-pitched NASCAR-like sound. I'm working on getting tuned this Saturday so I need good, clear answers quick.

The questions:
1) How much performance from an x-pipe? I have to decide if performance outweighs my sound preference.
X-pipe/H-pipe function with the same purpose of equalizing pressure on each side of a V-8 motor. Although the differences are minimal (at best) the X-pipe has been shown to flow slightly better than an H-pipe.

2)How much (if any) performance from res-delete tips? They do reduce a restriction.
None

3) Perhaps most importantly, would either play into or be enhanced by the tune? In other words, if they were done AFTER the tune, would I still get the performance increase(s), if any? Any negative affect ont he tune? Retune needed?
Any tune over the stock tune should increase performance be it custom/"dyno-tune" or a programmer of choice

4) If there's a performance advantage with x-pipe, is there a way to keep the low, rumbly sound?
An X-pipe has a unique sound to itself over an H-pipe...although it is subtle and some may not be able to tell a difference, Sound comes from 3 key areas...1) size/HP from motor 2) type/quality of mufflers used and 3) size of tubing i.e. larger diameter tubing will be louder

Any help or experience will be greatly appreciated.

Thanx inadvance, ya'll.
Rich

Your welcome for the lunch you have to keep the mechanics well fed… lol
Ill definitely be brining her down to strap up on the Dyno once my 4.10s and Torque Converter are in…

I called Kooks over the winter and I was quoted $2300 for long tubes, hi-flo cats, X-pipe, magnaflow mufflers and reusing my pipes from the mufflers back. I was also told that it just doesnt sound good with res-delete tips. Which is why a H pipe is more my style.

I Know everyone on this forum has there own particular taste toward exhaust. But all I can say Paul is I love the sound of my KOOKS system minus magnaflows.
I feel the exhaust with kooks will be more raspy and higher pitched. It is not really deep.
Don’t rush into it.. If you go to the track with us in the fall you can listen to mine and decide from there.
