The little woman is thinking about a remote start for my B/day.:woohoo: Really considering the factory model (resale ya no). shouldn't it be a direct plug in, and where's the plug?

it's spliced into the wiring system - very complicated.

That's why I don't have one. ^^^^^^

I was wondering about that. The local Mercury dealer quoted me almost $400 for the labor. A simple plug in wouldn't take that much time.
Does anyone know of any aftermarket alarm/remote starters that they do recommend?

I have the dealer sold unit on my Sport, works great. I also have a NIB complete spare unit that I stumbled across on Epay one day. I can hook you up with it if you need it, PM me if your interested, I also have the install instructions.

You can get a darn good aftermarket alarm with remote start and trunk pop...etc...for that kind of money!

The Marauder isnt that bad of a vehicle. I have done mine and about three other GMs. (I installed at a high end shop) Your local car audio shop, not mass merchant, should be able to handle it. I run a OLD Clifford on mine unit is about 8 years old, pulled from my last car. Make sure what ever brand/shop you choose the dealer solders everything in. NO T-TAPS, SCOTCH LOCKS or any other *****ty half a$$ conections...remember you will need the remote start unit, a bypass for the transponder, and a competant installer. When I did them they would take me about four hours, and I have done over three thousand in my career. I charged about $350 for keyless and remote start installed. I hope this answers some questions

I love remote start. That being said my sister just bought an '08 Malibu LTZ that came with factory remote start.

I have an Ungo on the Marauder and new Clifford on the Crown Vic daily driver. I like the Clifford alot. Both are 2-way setups. Anything made by DEI should be good - i.e. Clifford.

Check out your local stereo shops and see what they can do. You can get a base remote start with keyless entry or 2-way remote start/alarm setup that replaces the factory keyless entry. The setup in the Marauder uses the spare, grey colored key in a box to feed the signal needed to allow the car to start since the Marauder keys are chipped. I still have 2 other keys - the primary and one on the backup remote.

^+1 DEI products are reliable. I have installed/removed the Autopage RS 855 in the wife's '05 Freestyle and I went with the RS900 in my 07 F-150. I picked up the RS 900 for 139 shipped on ebay and paid 150 for the install from a reliable installer who is knowledgeable on the DEI products.
Clifford, Viper, Autopage and a few other name are made by DEI. get remote start / alarm combo...my .02
as far as a third key, buy one on ebay for around $10-15 , have it cut to your original keys and program it yourself.

Thanks for the suggestions. The dealer quote of almost $400 was just for the labor, not including the unit itself. All together it was going to run over $500. for that much, I was thinking a good aftermarker unit with an alarm system would be a better buy.

DEI & CompuStar make good stuff as well as some of the other aftermarket big names, but for the best range, either OEM or aftermarket, CompuStar wins imho.
I put a CompuStar 2-way in my Lincoln a couple years ago when I got it and love it. Mind you the Canadian models have greater range the US ones :)

I got mine installed for $400.00....it is the dealer one and had it installed by the dealer....never had a problem with it. I love mine!! I thought about getting another one that has a few more bells....like roll down the windows for 300.00 installed....and its a two way. But nothing is wrong with mine so I dont plan on changing it.

Heck, tell her to give you the cash and you can buy her a nice warm jacket and shoes to go out in the cold mornings and start your car for you and still have money left over for beer and mods.

Most dealers do not install themselves.
My local dealer subs the work out to a local company that takes care of all the remotre starts/alarms/etc....
I simply called that company (once I found out who) and was able to eliminate the dealership add ($) to the cost....

I've done this on a Navigator, Marauder, Aviator, Mazda Millenia S, etc...

I did install the Navi unit with help of a buddy but had to take it to company anyway... apparently although my Girlfriend insisted we didn something wrong and it didn't work....(it was complicated for first time person) but it turns out the dealership sold me a defective unit so the company they sub out to diagnosed it for me and simply change the unit... all work well...

go with the aftermarket, they have the most advanced products. There is even one out there that can be started with a text message from your cell phone. isn't technology awesome!!

Stay away from Viper, IMO. The range sucks!

Depending on bypass that the dealer uses you may or may not lose a key. I use trilogic bypasses and as long as you have two keys, I can program my bypass and you wont lose one. Some other bypasses put an extra key in a box and when the remote start fires up it uses the key placed inside of it. Main thing is to make sure you feel safe with your installer and he uses product he understands.

Stay away from Best Buy when it comes to something like this. Granted I am sure some do good work but usually you have a kid who is not MECP certified working on the car. I only let people who have been or are MECP cert touch any of my cars when I do not want to do the work myself.

Some Best Buy somewhere had to fork out $12k to fix a totaled Honda Civic as the "tech" who did the work really goofed big time in the past several months. Plus they crimp everything. In my line of work dealing with state ordered ignition interlock units everything must be hardwired to the vehicle (sodered, no crimps ever) and it's clean and secure, crimps over time can come loose.

True most dealers do not have a tech trained to deal with such things and they will out source it to a local audio shop. When I worked at a Ford dealer we used to have a guy come by here and there to do radio swaps when needed, LoJack came to the dealership to do the installs. Anything else we sent right down the road. From working at a car a/v shop before I made a lot of contacts and was a back up car a/v installer when they needed something asap to make or break the deal.

I've only really liked Viper brand name since Clifford was just the upscale name for the same thing. Honestly it's really not hard to install the alarm/remote starter IF you have somewhat past knowledge or something along those lines. If anyone every needs a wiring diagram for an alarm/remote starter just PM me for it.
