My MM isn't using enough oil between changes to be noticeable at all. BTW- 1 Quart down from full is low. If you are running 2-3 quarts low - you have problems. If your MM is burning that much oil it should be noticeable and you shouldn't be waiting 2 months to check it. With that kind of consumption you probably should be checking at least once a week or maybe even twice. I suspect that you are getting other indications of problems, too.

how many miles do you put on her in 2 months? how many miles on vehicles? do you have alot of blue smoke, are the plugs fouled?
the more info the better so someone can help with the diagnosis.

I am at a quart a month... keep an eye on it!!! dont want to damage your car! I am checking it once a month or if I go on a long trip... seems to be a quart a month though

I would check your valve guide seals. I had a 2 valve 92 GM LS and went through a quart of oil every 600 miles.

I add about half a quart per oil change which is every 3 months and 4k miles. I don't have any leaks anywhere so I guess maybe its being sucked back into the intake.

No that is not at all normal. I change my oil every 6-7k miles and I add NO oil during the change interval. None at all.

1 Quart between 3 to 5K is what mine has used from day one. Dealer told me that was normal "It's a FORD sir"...:flamer: and not excessive till it got to use one quart every 1K miles. :mad2:

1 quart every 1k is an old 1960's stand-by. 1 quart every k is to the point where you have to worry about poisoning your cat and O2s

Never low, but neither car has reached 50000 miles yet.

It'll take alot more oil than that to kill a cat. My old '92 GM with bad valve seals (120K) was using 1 quart every 500-600 miles, making lots of smoke on accel from a green light. Never had the engine light come on. After replacing the valve seals it used no oil between 3K oil changes. I put on another 60K before selling it to a friend to use for 100 mile round trip commute 5 days a week. He's had it a couple years now and it's still going strong.

LOL I wouldn't consider OBDI in 1992 the best test of catalyst function. Did that car even have a post cat O2?

I bet it is a 1960's stand-by. Never the less, FORD's S.O.P. is to still use this outdated "stand-by".

I heard the same thing from my dealer.

I miss about half a quart (still in the middle of the check marks on the dip stick) at my 3K mile changes. I check it at 1,500 miles and it's still full.

I have smoke on start up and wanted them to "FIX" the Valves or heads....What was I thinking? Ford will fix a known problem while i'm still under 36 mile warranty? HA!

1 quart every 1k is an old 1960's stand-by.The 2003 Ford service manual states that 1 quart per 900 miles is considered "acceptable"...
1 quart every k is to the point where you have to worry about poisoning your cat and O2s
The current API motor oil formulation (SM) requires a reduced level of Phosphorus specifically to address this issue.

I've used as little as 5.5 qts to 6.5 qts when I have changed my oil and I let mine drain for a good 20 mins and will usually run half a qt through with the new filter on to grab any other old oil it can, let drain for another 15 mins and put the drain plug back in.

I'll be doing another oil change sometime this week and a seafoam treatment :)

I don't understand this but I have high miles (172,xxx) and never used a drop between 5K mile changes!!??:shake: Only car I ever had that doesn't use at least some oil but also the only car I add upper cylinder oil to every gas fill up!!

Sometimes I wonder when it will quit on me......like Mongoose, I think he was around 180K or so.......Oh well, I'll fix it and just go at it again!!:D

Best darn car I have ever owned!!:bows:

I guess driving the car like you stole it from the start helps seal things in the engine, I dont burn or loose a drop of oil and I have 61K miles. I have been using synthetic since I owned the car at 24K miles.

I don't think it had rear O2's, but the point is that even now with 230K on that car the cats have never been replaced. Also transmission as never been out of the car, and other that valve seals, the engine is all original.

95 was the 1st year for catalyst monitors. I should know. I had 2 CVPIs.

After sitting for 2 or more days when I start my car it has a mushroom cloud of blue smoke out the pipes.

Makes me feel ford pride with blue smoke eh?

Gonna sound stupid here but.... I've noticed that this car like certain oils better than others. Change the PCV and try a different brand of oil. I just had an oil change with Penzoil and I am going to change it out. Anyway, yours may be like mine. When I bought the car, the dealer changed the oil before handing it over. It smoked on start up. I changed to Castrol and it stopped.

Aluminum motors are funny like that, keep trying other brands until you find one that suits your vehicle.

Have owned a 77 Marquis with a 400 c.i. engine and never added oil. Traded at 40 K. My 80 marguis never added oil. Traded at about 90 K. Had an unbelieveable 89 Grand Marq and from day one added about a quart of oil to 5.0 liter engine. Never added more. Traded at 234 K on a 2000 GS Marquis. Never had an engine problem on the 89. The 2000 never added oil and I have 89 K on the 2004 Marauder and never added oil yet between changes. To the guy who said he went 6 to 7 K between changes are you out of your mind? I'd never go that long. I do on average around just under 4 K and do about 80 - 85 % turnpike driving. Would never go over 4 K. Changing fluids frequently is the most important thing you do in a car. This means oil, water, tranny fluid etc. I think you definitely have a problem if you are adding this much oil. Do you by any chance race it? Have you altered any of the parts and replaced with after market stuff? Are you turbo charged? My late mechanic of over 40 years said to me if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I've been using RP oil for a while now and didn't have to start adding any until sometime last year. It's not every oil change just here and there. I check all my fluids 2-3 times a week. I did replace my PCV valve last year. I guess it wouldn't hurt to pull it out and clean it.

Do Ford dealerships do engine flushes and are they wise to do for our car?

No. It's called full synthetic oil. I do all highway driving. Read up about synthetic oil and extended drain intervals on google. If you are throwing out synthetic oil at 3-4k you are wasting money and fluids. Just because you don't "feel" like going over 4k does not mean an oil analysis agrees with you.
