View Full Version : Watch out for those Dodge Dokata RT's

Hey, I know most guys write about their victories on here, but I must admit I was caught off guard completely by this stealth lookin black pick-up truck a few weeks ago.....
I was on my way to work, and some guy in that truck was in front of me. I was about 50 feet behind him, and we were both doing about 30MPH w/a lot of open road in front of us. So the guy stomps on the gas pedal and so did I. His truck fish tailed a little bit which gave me mixed feelings.....on one hand I was glad that his loss of traction prevented him from getting the jump on me. But on the other hand I thought "Gee, what's this guy got under the hood if he could break loose those big tires like that?"
So at first my MM kept up w/him for about the first 150 feet. But after that his truck just walked away from me despite the fact that I kept the pedal on the floor. Yes, he did have to make his motor work hard to get away from me, but it was clear to both of us who's ride was faster. Then further on down the road I notice that the guy is pulling into the parking lot of my workplace. It turns out he works where I do although I don't know him, and never saw him before.
I didn't know what the heck he had until I went on a bunch of websites, and found out. When I did I was even more surprised. It was a Dodge Dakota, which is their cheaper pick-up. But not the standard model. This was a Dakota RT. They have a "360 Magnum" motor that happens to be supercharged(little did I know). Man, did this guy surprise me. What kills me is that for the next two weeks straight I brought my Vette into work every day, and I never saw the guy. I know I would've smoked him w/my Vette. And wouldn't ya know the second day that I satarted driving my MM into work again there was that black pick-up truck again right in front of me.
Moral of the story is....unless you're blown, don't mess w/anyone who has one of these trucks........

My buddies stepson put one of those R/T's in his place with his Lightning...in the rearview mirror and shrinking.

I took one of those Dakota Magnum's right after installing the chip, stat, and Densos. Wasn't much of a contest either.
Didn't know Dodge offered a S/C version. Are you sure it was stock?
Logan

Dodge doesn't offer a Supercharged R/T. If it was supercharged, it was aftermarket. R/T's are slower than poop from the factory, mid-high 15 second quarters.
Lightning's routinely hand R/T's their lunch, a stock marauder will still beat it, albeit, by nowhere are much though.

a stock dodge dakota is NOT supercharged and will easily run with our MMs. intake, exhaust and chip easily puts them in mid 14s. also be careful of hemi 1500s and 2500s. a short bed 1500 2wd stock runs high 14s-low 15s stock. don't be discouraged. if you bought your car for speed instead of nostalgia or comfort - i'm sorry. i work at Acura and the cl-s, tl-s and rsx-s are all faster. all will run o-60 in 6 flat and 14.7 at 97 mph in the 1/4. the rsx-s needs exhaust and intake as stock is choked.

There are seven different models of the Dakotas. Among them are the the standard model, the Dakota Sport, and the Dakota RT. And the Dakota RT IS SuperCharged, and it does a 13.7 sec Quartermile according to the magazine articles.
So all of your experiences weren't with the S/C'd Dakotas. They're out there, and if you put your non-blown MM's up against one of them you'll experience an unpleasant surprise like I have.;)

I just went on the website (just like I did after that truck beat my car). And just like I previously said, the Dakota R/T comes w/a 360 Magnum motor that is superCharged, and a 4 speed automatic transmission. The list price is $24,770 and it will smoke our Marauders unless we S/C them, and BTW the truck looks a lot nicer than a Ford Lightning does too. You probably won't see a lot of these trucks around cuz they're not even offered in 4 wheel drive. So nobody is likely to buy these trucks unless they just want to go fast in a truck. If you do see one, you won't even know that it's an R/T model until you race it cuz it's very stealth looking just like our MM's are. There are no big sissy letters across the side of the truck that say "sport" or anything like that. It's probably the truck that the "Green Hornet" would've driven(you older guys will get that). For you skeptics out there, just let me know when you race one of these and get beat. Or you can investigate a little just like I did before I started this thread by going to www.Dodge.com

Well , When I just looked at the dodge link posted by BillyGman above , I did not read where it states it is supercharged--just that it comes with a 5.9 liter Magnum V-8...
So did I miss it and or is it posted elswhere--otherwise-- if it was supercharged from factory---I'm sure that part would be highly advertised.... and BTW-had one want to run me before I added my "stage 1" and although it was a short run---he only caught me cause we ran out of room and had to turn onto on-ramp...he waved what I guess was a "I give up wave or sorry for coming up so fast to your rear wave" as slowed down...so I would say his wasn't charged with anything ,,however, it's not to say one couldn't be charged after market wise-- I'm sure--- my .02 cents worth...Tom

BillyG.... You're simply wrong dude.
I've been around a ton of R/T's, seen everything dodge has to offer and the $24,770 MSRP R/T you're quoting from Dodge, yes, has the Magnum 360 engine, but it sure the hell isn't supercharged, and it sure the hell doesn't do 13.7 seconds in the quarter.
The only other RT worth mentioning is the Dodge RT/10, Viper powered 1500, 500hp/500ftlbs, but rumor has it, it's getting killed before it even gets out of the gate.
I'll say it one last time, Dodge does NOT make a supercharged Dakota. Stop trying to tell me they do, you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

rather humiliating I must admit. Now that I put my foot in my mouth w/my keyboard, let me say two things:
First I want to ask you guys to accept my apology.
Second, please let me explain. I guess this guy who DID beat me in a rat race was feeding me a line of bull by telling me that his truck is stock and that he bought it Supercharged. And I made the mistake of believing him. I still believe that his truck is S/C'd because the thing really flies, and I can't keep up w/him w/my MM. But I guess it didn't come from the factory like that as he claimed. But I hope that I didn't offend anyone. Thanks for your correction on this. I thought that I did see a Dakota listed in a mag that does a 13.7 ET, but I guess I can't argue that since I could be very well mistaking about that. Again thankyou all for your correction.:(

a nice lookin truck. The R/T that beat my car was similar, although I don't think that it has the extended cab, and I looked at the front of it(which I could only get to see when it's standing still:rolleyes: ) and I noticed that it doesn't have the body molding over the grill like your uncle's does. His doesn't even say "Dakota R/T" across the side like that either. It's completely stealth. Atleast from what I saw anyway. I know where he parks it so I think I'll take a closer look at it in work.......

the guy out ran me in my MM, and that's what bothered me the most. If it were a Vette, Camaro, Mustang Cobra, or some other aggressive sports car, it wouldn't have bothered me cuz I know that those cars aren't a big 4100lb sedan like our cars are. But I never expected to get beat by a pick-up truck unless it were some type of nastalgia truck w/a built up big block motor in it. I mean I've heard about the lightning, but I don't really expect to see very many of them.
But now I'm kinda glad that Ibrought this up, because even though I didn't realize it before, I now realize that I needed you guys to correct me on this, because it doesn't bother me so much now that I got beat by a guy who obviously put a lot of $$ into his truck to get it to go much faster than the factory made it, and if I put as much $$ into my Marauder as he did in his truck, I'd smoke em for sure since he didn't walk away from me all that fast. I mean it was a clear win, but it wasn't like I didn't even give him a halfway decent run.
But obviously I just wished I'd brought this whole thing up as a question to you guys. But I've already apologized for that, and I know that atleast some of you have accepted my apology. So that's all I can do. I gotta admit though, it would be nice to get my MM supercharged and see the look on the guy's face when I blow right by him:flamer:
Hmmm, maybe it's time to sell my 73 Vette to fund my MM S/Cer project(decisions decisions.....)

--now --this other about the R/T fast in FLa-
-Well, I go to Fla about twice a year and for the life of me---can't see where you could get any enjoyment from such a fast vehicle down there.....everwhere you go off the interstate-- it's 35 MPH it seems.... and Deputies everwhere as well....no fun unless back up on the interstate......Fla makes it difficult with their slow limits and older drivers ....my .o2 cents anyway---

Lpgan, your info is wrong, a RC R/T is good for low 15s high 14s (a few have even hit 14.5s), a club cab for low/mid 15s, you have to be a horrible driver to get a high 15 from an R/T. my brother has a 99 that easily ran 15.2 BONE STOCK at 1200 ft. elevation and a bad 2.2 60 ft in terrrible weather conditions. R/Ts come NA, there a few SCs avail. through the aftermarket only It is EASY to get an R/T into the 13s with simple bolt-ons, there are even a few bolt-on only R/Ts knocking on the door to 12s. . Don't want to read the whole thread, but R/Ts are a lot quicker and better packages than you are giving them credit for. As for the SRT/10, put that silly rumor to rest, it IS coming out, full 500 HP/525 torque Viper V-10 and a 6 speed tranny, it WILL be available this fall.

Hey all,
First of all I want to say y'all have a great forum here. My father-in-law is a proud owner of a 2003 MM, purchased June last year. It's indeed an awesome looking car and a powerful one to boot. He let me drive it once, and I must say it's one helluva ride.
I've noticed the talk here about the Dakota R/Ts. Just want to add that I own a 2002 CC Dodge Dakota R/T, purchased July of last year. There's no mods added to it yet, although the only ones I'll probably put on are headers, 50mm TB, and a K&N drop in air filter.......that'll wake her up considerably. But for now she'll remain stock.
I noticed some of you fellows have some questions about the Dakota R/Ts, so let me give you some info on the truck (although Stew covered most of it)....
The R/Ts have the 5.9L (360) "Magnum" power plant, which puts out 250 HP and 345 FT/LBS of torque. Suspension is 1 inch lower than the non-R/T Daks, sway bars are in both the front and rear, and they have the unique (and nice looking) 17 inch R/T wheels.
They come both in regular cab and club cab and they do NOT come from the factory supercharged, although I wish they did.
They also corner the meanest of curves and twisties with the greatest ease.
The RC R/Ts run low 15's/high 14's in the 1/4 mile, while the heavier CC R/Ts run mid to low 15's.......stock. They have amazing low end power, but not-so-amazing top end. I can stomp mine from a stop, and she will literally slam the back of my head against the seat. A pure rush of adrenaline everytime:coolman:
The 5.9L engine is not a high revving lover, but there are a ton of aftermarket parts for it. A few bolt-ons and they're in the mid 14s. Several more, and they're dipping into the 13's....all N/A.
Throw a few initial mods along with a supercharger, and they're in the low 13's / high 12's. There's even several R/T owners out there running 12's and 11's with nitrous.
Dodge could have EASILY made the R/T a low 14 second truck, but hey, I love mine just the way she is. I have yet to put her on the track, would be nice to see exactly how she'll run stock, when it's cooler of course-------they bog easily in high temps with high humidity.
A while back I took my father-in-law for a ride in mine, and he mentioned that it would probably take his Marauder. I don't know, I do know I would jump him off the line, but to keep the lead is the question. Guess we'll have to line them up and see:P
