So ... I was detailing my car today and getting ready to pull her back in the garage when .... I see purple fluid on my garage floor. Not a lot, but enough. It is coming from my rear differential. After paying a well known speed shop to install my gears, I'm disappointed. The speed shop is an hour and a half from my house.

Is this just a poorly tightened differential cover or a sign of something else? I don't want to drive another 1.5 hours to the same speed shop. Should I just take it to a local shop? Thoughts??

Depends where its leaking from, If its just the diff cover, you can do that yourself and just refill the diff. If its the front seal the you may want to return to the place who did the work.

Prof,

Did you use the original diff. cover or replace it with a girdle? I had a slight leak in mine after frdwrnch installed my gears, he ended up replacing the gasket as well as some sort of sealer on it. I'll PM him and see if I can get more info.

Like SC said, depends where it came from....and you should be able to tell.

It could be over filled
if you re-used the stock pizza pan cover, it's easily damaged
if you used a Diff cover, girdle & stud kit from Wes, special attention must be taken to properly seal it, making sure the threads aren't weeping. In any case, take a look yourself and fix it yourself; it's really simple, that is, if you have a way to get under the car.:)

I had them install a Ford Racing differential and that does appear to be where the leak is coming from, though I am unable to get as far under it as I would like. I'll call the speed shop today and get his recommendation.

I am unable to get as far under it as I would like.Back the car up on a set of ramps...

If it's weeping around one of the 2 "girdle" adjustments, just take it off and put some thread sealer on the adjustments. If it's leaking around the flange of the cover itself, tighten the bolts. If they're already tight, then the gasket may be bad. You can get the superior Victor Reinz gaskets at any NAPA store.
