View Full Version : Blue Smoke on Startup

I parked my car on Friday night in the garage. The car sat until today, Sunday morning. I started it up, and noticed blue smoke from the back of my car. It went away after a few seconds.

This can't be normal with our cars? Anyone had this issue? I've only got about 40,000 Miles on the car.

Any thoughts or ideas? This is the first time this has happened, but I'll be keeping a close eye on things

I've read previous threads about this, don't recall the reasons on why this happens, but I don't remember anyone saying they had major problems or their cars having serious malfunctions due to this blue smoke thing...I would double check though.

Mine does it occasionally :(

I thought it was the valve seals allowing oil to drain back into the head that caused the smoke on start up.

The more knowledgeable engine folks around here should be able to enlighten all of us!

This is what I thought. My understanding is that the 2V 4.6s have had issues with this in past. As far as the info in the thread, I am running Motorcraft 5-20, and I do drive the car like a grandmother (25mpg+ ...imperial gallons combined city and highway is the reward) and am not pushing the car like the last post in the thread suggested.

All that aside, I thought that smoke on startup meant oil leaking past the valve seals. How else does oil enter the combustion chamber? (Yea, oil control rings, but that would mean a constant smoke to me). PCV?

Just curious about the circumstances. Did you just jump in the car, start it up just briefly to move it into the garage and shut her down? I got a puff of blue smoke after a similar "short move" that took less than a minute. Not even enough time for the engine to warm up and it was shut down. Could be residual fuel remaining from the cold shut down. :dunno:

No, not at all. I started the car after it was sitting for about 36 hours and then drove to the store. The blue smoke happened on startup.

I don't know why Cobra's and Mach's dont have this issue, but I think it is what makes a MM a MM.Mine does it periodicaly, and I am no longer worried. It did scare me at first till I read everyone elses stories.

If you let the car sit for a good week or so, then start it up, you'll get some good smoke right when you go to start it up. At least mine does it, and it only has 11k miles.

It s normal for our MM----special made condion -- ---to let all know -don't mess with an MM........seriously..though--- its ok----goes away after warm up --the hotter the engine the less smoke on start up----a special
"visual note" to those around ---that we're BAD!!!! :banana2::beer:

Mine only does it when I moved the car briefly, then park if for a while, then start it open again. I don't think its much to worry about.

I have an 03a and it sits A LOT for a week at a time, and it still does not do the blue smoke at 32k miles. Everyone tells me wait for it, it will start doing it soon. Not yet... fingers crossed

My MM does it once in a while, started after the 20K mile point.

It seems random on mine, tried to track it but there was no pattern.

However, I don't have any issues with performance, oil consumption or fouled plugs.

What Pat said, Mine does it to, doesn't seem to hurt performance.

My old engine used to do it for years.... years. No problems at all and it would do it everyday. Don't worry about it, just race it. :coolman:

Well, it's been three days and the car hasn't done it again. The car will sit on Friday through till Monday, so we'll see what happens on Tuesday morning.
