I have the proverbial chipped paint on some of my door edges.

Using just the Mercury touch up paint is not enough I've been told. Do I need to use clear coat on top of the touch up paint?

Also, I've been told to check with the Mothers.com paint line. Any suggestions from anyone?

Door edges are easy becasue they are not obvious. What about chipped paint (right to the metal) in the front of a car caused by pebbles?

I installed the Ford factory door edge guards on mine... they come in matte black and you can barely tell they're there...

I've just been using the touch-up paint...she kinda looks like a pimpley-faced, school girl up close...but I figure it's better than bare metal. That's why I'm so envious of Tim's new paintjob. Oh well, I'll get her a real one in a few years.

claims their kits are an exact match AND do not produce the pimply effect. This is because of the "Special Blender" in the kit which they claim "smooth[es] out the paint level with the cars[sic] finish without leaving that ugly blob of paint on your car that brushes leave".

I got a touch-up kit from them for my '86 Fox body. I have not used this yet, so I cannot say how good it is/is not. But I believe it has to be better than using the little paint bottles from the dealer.

Well, the kit for my '86 that I got looks very complete and well thought out. But, like I said, I ain't tried it yet. Until then the jury is out.

Most dealers in your town have a guru, contract player, that details cars. Most of the new cars have damage prior to sale. There is a great one here. He is really great and reasonable. He has fixed doors,Bird droppings, places where demos that went bad etc. Check with the parts department. They will find him for you. Most of them can do a lot without any paint. The Touch-up paint is way to thick, as it comes. The make ready department will know someone if there is no responce from parts.

If you get the touch up paint when it is fresh, and use the torn off end of a matchstick to dab it in there, it will flow almost flush with the surface of the paint. You'll be surprised how well it works, I've done it for years. It works way better than the brush that comes on the bottle lid.

Most towns will also have a paint touch up company that will come to your house/business and fix all your little stone chips for a reasonable amount .A friend of mine has this service done once a year and I've watched the process.They air-brush a very small bit of paint on the chip , let it dry for a few minutes,then polish it smooth.It only costs about $ 100.00 and it looks absolutelyperfect.

Duplicolor makes a kit http://www.duplicolor.com/products/repair.html for this also. I saw it used on two guys garage and it did a great job. The kit includes the paint, sandpaper etc... and can be found at local autoparts stores and Walmart. I have not used this kit myself so I can't say personnally how effective it is.
