Does everyone's engine rattle on startup during the infamous 2k rev like an old car with loose valves? Mine does with only 4k on it and it drives me crazy!

No.
Perfectly smooth startup to about 1900 RPM (as per stock tach, however accurate it might be). No extraneous noise other than the driver's side ticking that commences immediately at startup, hot or cold.

Honestly, anyone with a rattle on startup, I would definitely be sitting down for a serious heart-to-heart with my service rep and the dealership's lead tech. No excuse for that kind of startup on a modern engine like the 4.6l DOHC.

Only when she has sat up for 5 or more days as has been previously reported by others on this site.

Thanks for the quick responses. I ended up getting my car in tonight and they will start it up in the morning to check it out.

Mine has done it since new........sounds just like no oil in the rods........only does it cold and only for a split second at start-up

6500 miles now.................

Assuming Mr Twin Cities is describing the same noise, mine has done it from day 1, hot or cold, now with 5K. Even with syn oil, noise still there. It does not sound like a problem though, I hope!! I will soon be installing a preluber which should only help. I know a lot of you poo-poo a preluber, but I'm soundly convinced of their benefits. I'll let ya know in about 3 weeks Mr Twin Cities.

16,000 miles and no engine noise at start up.

Mine rattles only when the engine's cold and it is cold outside (say, below 40 degrees). It rattles at certain RPMs until the engine warms up a little. I was told it is a clearance issue with some of the moving parts in the engine and when the engine heats up, everything expands and fits tighter, and the rattle stops.

The Defyant Marauder is silent with no smoke on start up - so far @ 17K+ miles

The 2004 CVPI I have on the other hand makes all kinds of noise at start up. It has 32K and is basically driven like any other car - not like the average police car.

Mine doesn't rattle either. I've heard for some that do atleast one person (Joe Walsh maybe?) has an oil accumulator that will preserve oil pressure giving you full pressure on startup (trusting you allow the accumulator to store pressure before shutdown). This may be a good fix and good insurance for some.

Although I'd hate to open a can of worms, it'd be interesting to see who is having noises and what oil they're using...but that probably wouldn't go too far before being a grudge match...if we could keep to the facts though it'd be interesting to see if there was a correlation in the data. (data, not opinions.)

Mine doesn't rattle, but I've had this whistle since the day I bought it. :baaa:

The rattle on startup is from the timing chain, because the tensioners run off oil pressure. My Tbird did it in cold (-30*) weather, and my Cobra does it once in a while if I don't drive it for a while. A friend of mine who is a machinist, hooked a 4V up to a motor and spun it without the timing cover on it. The chains whipped all over the place for about 2 seconds before the tensioners kicked in and everything worked fine after.

An accumulator collects excessive oil from the PCV system before it recirculates crankcase air into the combustion process. The accumulator needs tro be drained every once in a while, and the oil collect can be returned to the crancase.

A top oiler carries out the process you describe here. I too recall someone installing it, but not who.

99SVT....

That is the best explanation I have heard yet!! I had an early 90's Mark VIII that rattled so bad I thought a rod was coming out of it but it never gave any problem!!

My MM did it at oil changes with a dry filter but still sounded awful!!!:argue:

One of the reasons I did the remote filter.....It didn't rattle when I cranked it after the install but the FL-1 was full and vertical!!!:bows:

21,500, now can't seem to use it like the weekend driver it should be as I grab the MM key everytime out the door. No problem other than a need to drive it hard. Dennis:beer:

Zero rattle, no blue smoke, nothing.

Whether you have rattles or not, free revving the engine to 2K at start-up is not good!! For those of you who are using a chip or flash tuning device, eliminating this is easy.

57,777 KM on mine no noises or smoke :). Running 5w20 ....stock engine still :(

31k on mine. I have to listen carefully to make sure its running. My 347 has practicly made me deaf between rocker/valvetrain noise and exhaust.

This is True, When its really cold out, My engine cranks to about 1200 then starts and the idle drops to a 800-900 RPM right away
At 41k Miles, No noise at start-up
However
My Mothers 03 Caddilac DTS with 30k, At a cold start-up, you think the engine is coming apart

My Marauder would clatter pretty bad when I would first start it up.

Especially because mine is not a daily driver...it would sit for a week or two allowing all the oil to drain back into the oil pan.

I always thought that it was valvetrain noise, but 99SVT's comment about the timing chains also makes sense.

I installed a Canton 'Accusump' oil accumulator along with my remote oil filter mount. Now when I fire up my engine there is no clatter.

I have 50 psi oil pressure instantly, as the engine cranks, before it even fires up!

There is a picture of my engine compartment (with the Accusump installed on the driver's side fender liner) in the '05 WDC gallery.
It was when we were all parked in front of the Burger King.

http://www.accusump.com/

FWIW, mine's always done the cold startup rattle since I got it. Sounds like classic rod bearings to me, but I
suppose it could be chains. I've had older engines do this (my '85 GT f'rinstance) and still last > 180K miles,
so I'm not stressing too much over it.

I'm using the Motorcraft 5W20 oil, and FL-820S filter, if anyone's keeping score.

The Accusump not only will help with the cold startup issues, it'll also keep your oil pressure up when jamming
your favorite cloverleaf. Not that I would ever do such a thing on public roads... ;)

oops...My bad, and my apologies.

I was thinking of the Steeds Oil Seperator popular with the Mustang crowd, that collects oil from the PCV system on supercharged applications.

Carry on, gents.
