Rumor has it that the City of Chicago is attempting to pass many other & also a new window tint penalty that would charge $250.00, no longer $25.00 if caught! NOT good for me with limo tints all around! So if it does pass I'd probably have to hide or park indoors to keep it away from the NO MERCY METER MAIDS! My opinion and the fact that Crook County is the highest taxed area in the nation, which includes Mayor DALEY pushing his Olympic bid! Where would all this money come from hmmmmm? hey in MA its $250.00 PER WINDOW that is illegally tinted. Mine registered at 3.3% and the cop was not happy. ticket should have been upwards of $1250.00 ( all four windows, back glass at 2% ad windshield at 35%)

let me off with a $250 ticket but i won in court since i bought the car with the tint already on the car, and i had it removed soon after being stopped.

I do not think there is a legal tint all around. You can tint as dark as you want, but you cannot do the drivers window... which will look weird. Some tint dark as possible the rear row and window and leave the drivers window at 35% I believe and can usually get away with it, but some people will walk to their cars and find a ticket.

Once I got one for a tinted plate and expired... if the F-ing cop read my plate it was still good for 11 months, but who is going to court over a $30 ticket? Based on the above, it would seem that "we" have no choice but to remove the tint from the front windows (driver and passenger side) that are "immediately adjacent to each side of the driver".

OK, Motorhead350... you will "KNOWINGLY" break a state LAW and still make a DEROGATORY comment like the above "F-ing cop", about a police officer who is enforcing the law :mad:. The LEO is not filling a "QUOTA" also where is the "false ticket", now you call him a lier :mad2:. And you also mention "and expired" if you had not put tinted registration plate covers on then you would not have been put in that position. You like many others when caught breaking a state law CRY "FOUL". I have tints on my MM so I don't drive as much as everybody else. You should APOLOGIZE to the many LEO's that are members of this board, they put their LIVES on the line everyday for our safety :bows:.

While tinted windows on the side and front windshield could provide some relief from the sun, they also obstruct the view of the driver. Cars are driven under many conditions and at night as well as in the daytime. Applied tint can't just be removed at night or during storms or other times it gets dark during daytime hours. A driver utilizing sunglasses can remove during these situations.
Secondary reasons for tint not being allowed on the front windows include identification of the driver in case of hit and run type crashes, and safety during law enforcement contacts. The reality is that most drivers who apply the tint do for asthetic reasons, not safety.

These are my observations, and the lawmakers may have had other reasons for originally enacting this law. The merits of many different laws are debated in the public, by citizens and even law enforcement officials. However the fact remains that unless they are changed by our lawmakers, they are in effect and will be enforced.



Now lets look at plate covers...

(625 ILCS 5/12‑610.5)
Sec. 12‑610.5. Registration plate covers.
(a) In this Section, "registration plate cover" means any tinted, colored, painted, marked, clear, or illuminated object that is designed to:
(1) cover any of the characters of a motor vehicle's
registration plate; or

(2) distort a recorded image of any of the characters
of a motor vehicle's registration plate recorded by an automated red light enforcement system as defined in Section 1‑105.5 of this Code or recorded by an automated traffic control system as defined in Section 15 of the Automated Traffic Control Systems in Highway Construction or Maintenance Zones Act.

(b) It shall be unlawful to operate any motor vehicle that is equipped with registration plate covers.
(c) A person may not sell or offer for sale a registration plate cover.
(d) A person may not advertise for the purpose of promoting the sale of registration plate covers.
(e) A violation of this Section or a similar provision of a local ordinance shall be an offense against laws and ordinances regulating the movement of traffic.

ALL this is covered by the Illinois vehicle code, so it not just Cook county but the whole state of Illinois!

It's about understanding the LAWS in the state you live in. If you drive without Ins whose fault is it when pulled over. If you have a beer and the test reads .08 whose fault is it? Laws are being passed everyday across this country, we may not agree, some are way out there. But as the old saying goes "There's no excuse for ignorance of the law". We get caught, we go before the judge with a puppy dog / 5yr old look on our faces and hope they have mercy on us. I've seen people close their eyes and pray that the fine & penalty will be light. In my state:

"Windows may not be any darker than 35% visible light transmission. This standard is considered to be met if the window tint is no lower than 32% visible light transmission when measured by the station with a photometer.

Windshield tinting is allowed, however the combination of the factory tint and the after market tint cannot have a light transmittance of less than 32%. The tint on the windshield cannot extend more than five inches below the top of the windshield or below the AS1 line of the windshield, whichever is longer. "

All the windows can be tinted including the windshield as stated above. What state allows you to tint all the windows as dark as you want except the drivers window? That sounds really stupid.

Why would you need a tinted plate when you got your blower on? Does it make the car faster? It took 3 $30.00 tickets for you to realize that it was illegal? I LEO most likely gave you a ticket because he couldn't see the expired registration sticker.... you think?

It's illegal in my state to have a cover or even a frame around the license plate.

Nothing on my car was expired and yes the tint on the plate makes the car go faster because it goes over the whole plate and allows better airflow. It's common to do with the Proguard. It's a mod that is a top secret!

I posted a copy of the "STATE LAW" yes it's a violation! Play that LEGALLY game in this state, they'll ask have you removed the tint? Your answer "yes" they'll ask for a copy of the receit. It's not a moving violation, but it's against the law... The ordinance can be found in The 2008 ILLINOIS VEHICLE CODE book.

It says in plain English, no person may DRIVE a motor vehicle. If the car is parked, you are not driving. Like I said, it's a moving violation and meter maids cant touch you. They do it because they get away with it. Fight it if you get a ticket for being parked with tints and see what happens.

My daughter had VERY slight tints on the sides and back of her TT. Since she moved downtown, she has received 2 tickets for tinted windows (car was just parked on the street, no tests were done to verify that it was too dark.) From what I was told, Chicago has there own rules about tinted windows...none whatsoever. So, I removed the tints, and no more problems. If that is what the law is, then so be it. No more tints as long as she lives in Chicago. To go to court and fight the ticket would cost me much much more than to just pay the fine ($25).

Trust me I know how this city works...Never got issued a ticket for tint "knock on wood!", just read an article in the Suntimes newspaper a couple weeks ago. We all know the city wants that money, I just thought the fine jumping from $25.00 to $250.00 was just a little excessive. Two years ago my tags expired, that following morning I was at the DMV for the new one. Well the officer came by seen it was expired for 9 hours he wrote a ticket. I contested it, went to the judge showed him my paper work, case dismissed, no fine. The judge cut me alot of slack. I was wrong for not having them on at midnite. The fine was the same cost as the tag. Sometimes one gets lucky, this might be your time! Just check the box and send it in.

NO... I didn't "Have to go to court". I took my chances like everybody else, the judge look at the paperwork and gave me a break. The Judge could have easily said guilty pay the fine. My tags expired at midnite, the ticket was wrote at 9am, the paperwork was 8:40am. The tags was in my hand not on the plates. Legally I was at fault! I fought the ticket because I chose to do so. You PUNKed out, you make excusses. You could have walk in with confidence and stated your case, plain and simple. You were in the right so why PUNK OUT. You talk the talk but don't walk the walk, then you have an excuse for it. $30 ain't S**T if you have proof to beat the system as you say you did, getting up at 6:30am to be there at 9am (WHINE, WHINE WHINE). Besides you have no idea what I do with my time and if you think that one $30 was the only chance I had to stand up for myself and "be a man" about a parking ticket, you have a lot to learn about me and life in general.

I had no fear in fighting the ticket, I just didn't want to pay $220 for a lawyer to hold my hand and save me $30 which would then cost me $220 for legal help.
