I had my local Ford Dealer change the oil since I was having the transmission flushed. I usually change the oil myself. They over filled the pan by 1/2 to 1 qt too much it looks like from the dip stick. Should I make them driain the overfill? Can up to a 1qt overfill cause any damage ? I know back in the day it was always better to be a 1/2 qt low so as not to cause increased internal pressure on the seals.

Go back and have them drain and refill to the correct level. Overfilling the oil can lead to the crank dipping in the oil, creating bubbles and  blowing up your motor. I'd drain the oil, refill myself (so you know it's done right) then charge them for the oil and your labor.

The oil level in the crankcase has nothing to do with "pressure on the seals". That's another one of those urban myths. It also has nothing to do with the actual oil pressure, unless the level is WAY low or high.

It's better to be slightly low (but still in the crosshatched area) than to be significantly overfilled. Having the oil level way too high can cause foaming if the crank throws come in contact with the oil, and since foam doesn't lubricate (or pump) well, that's a bad thing.

Being only ½ to 1 quart over doesn't qualify as "significantly overfilled", but if it was my car, I'd go under there and let a little out until it's no higher than the top hole on the dipstick, but I'm A/R when it comes to oil...

I pulled the dipstick and it looks closer to 1 qt. over. I did not notice any foaming or bubbles on the dipstick so I doubt the crank is splashing the oil. I think I will fix it myself. Seems like if you want anything done right you have to do it yourself. It is a rare thing to get good service or have any work done right the first time. I noticed today on the left rear tire THIS SIDE IN. Oh well back to the tire shop!!!

Pictures have been posted of the 4.6 block and I believe the crank is completely inside the block. Zack isn't that correct!!

There was a thread on here a few months ago, that showed an oil pan at proper level, 1 qt over, 2 qts. over, Etc., and stating that there is no cause for concern when overfilled, by up to 4 qts. over, also encouraging that the 4.6 be run at an overfull amount. Quite a long thread, with lots of different opinions, and much references.

Ditto, I always run 7 qrts..... 6 qrts have been shown to run to low for my comfort level when at WOT......These heads are big and can hold a lot of oil....

I had a friend put too much oil in his car once. It died the next day.

Lucky for him he had 200 cars to choose from, But I learned that day, as did he, don't put too much oil in your car.

The 4.6L engine can hold over 7qts in the oilpan (w/o the pickup).

I always fill it with 7qts. As long as the oil does not surpass the top of the pan... the crank will never hit it. Even if it's overfilled 1/2" over the pan it still won't hit. There is crank journal meat and windage tray in there too.

Manuals say 6qts. Filling a pan in my garage with oil says 7qts is perfectly fine.

I usually do 6.5qts and its right on the line. I also get the oil nice and hot, jack up one side higher than the other so the more oil will drain out and usually let it sit for 30-60 mins then take whatever spare 5w20 I have laying around and pour some in to push out whatever old oil is left in the oil pan.

Anyone use AMSOIL oil in there MM?

I use AMS oil, why do you ask, seeing my garage is full of their products that I stock for my use and for work??? Too much beer and pig cause amnesia?
