This may seem off the wall, but is there any chance any member has a photo of there Temperature Gauge at operating temperature? The reason I ask this is because I have a feeling the beast is running a little warmer than she is supposed to. It has been in the 80's and 90's here, but even my 07 GM (was mine until I gave it to my Dad) and mom's 99 GM gauges never fluctuate. No matter the temp. Just curious if its out there. Right now mine is juuuusssstttt over the halfway mark, but that could just be me. If I had the abilities to post a pic on the computer I would just show you guys. Sorry for the trouble. Thanks guys.

Before I got the Stewart water pump, it never moved from the halfway point, even in hot weather. With the Stewart water pump it definately runs cooler

Mine could very well be at the halfway point. But, through these  it looks a little warmer. I read somewhere here the needle should be lined up with the 18mph mark so I'll check that tomm.

The temp needle should be half way ie. the middle of the gauge. The needle should be pointing at about the 20MPH mark on the speedo.

I don't know about the accuracy of the OEM gauge but when mine points to 20 MPH the ScanGauge shows 220*......a bit high though I have heard these engines can safely handle 240* or so??

Since it was a very HOT day (105* last summer)....I turned the air off and it came back down to 206* or so.

I pressure washed the radiator and assorted cooling devices out front (including the intercooler) and have not seen anything over 210* this year!!

The gauge stays fixed from 180-224 degrees.
Anything over 224 and the car will act funny (failsafe mode engages to save the engine)

Definitely take the plastic cover off between the radiator and condenser and wash the junk off with a hose.

I was always accustomed to seeing the needle at the 20mph mark for normal temps, but ever since Zack put new guages in my car, it clearly stays at the 20mph mark even when it's at 178 and up to 200+.

Mine only goes up over 200 when I back into the garage and sit momentarily, and then drops right back down again.

What temp does the stock tune turn the fans on? A lot of cars don't even turn the fan on until 225. I'll chime in as well that exactly half way up is normal.

My Scangauge shows 181 degrees @ 78MPH with outside temps @ 84 degrees (needle points to about 20MPH on the speedo). I have a 180 degree stat installed.

Great! Thanks guys. Im on my way out the door right now, I'll post back later as to where my needle stopped and what it was pointing at. Thanks again.

Alright I stand corrected. I was in bumper to bumper traffic on the highway coming out of downtown today, the outside temp was 94, and the AC was blazin! The temp. needle lined up directly with 20mph. Thanks guys. For some reason it looked high to me. I am going to take that plastic cover off though and still clean behind the radiator. You guys pulled through again!

tjmorin82,

.....couldn't ask for a better one.

Sure you could...:P
One with the speedo buried.:D

I have kept up with this thread for a few days now, and ironically, I had a similar issue yesterday.

My MM overheated while in line at a fast food establishment.
I watched the scan guage go from 189 to 238 in the matter of minutes.

It turned out that the motor for the fan was failing.
Once rolling I was fine, but if I had to stop, it was not a good scene.
I had to blow a few red lights and pass on the berm to get home.

I also learned that when the temp reaches the 235-240 mark, the motor is told to shut down. Not stall...but power down as if it were a 2 cylinder.
This effected me once on the way home where I could not safely get through an intersection illegally and she got mighty hot. Once I got her up to 45 or so, which took quite awhile, the temps started to drop and the power came back.

The dealer replaced the motor under warranty today even though it was attached to a mustang shroud and blocked by a large vortec intake pipe. :D

You are running a few degrees warm.
I am running stock Thermostat and Gold AF mixture with Water Wetter added.
My temp needle points to about 18 MPH.

You asked for pictures.... Sorry for the blurryness but I was doing almost 70MPH and taking these pictures with my cell phone

fastblackmerc,

You didnt have to go through all that trouble, thanks. Mine lines up exactly how yours and tjmorin82 does but now MENINBLK is saying where running a little hot. This may sound stupid but do you guys think some run slightly warmer than others? Mine is completely stock except for K&N CAI. CRUZTAKER, sorry to hear that man, hope you dont consider me bad luck, but it sounds like your a little pumped up about your new motor!

Of course some motors will run hotter than others.

I have a colder (180 degree t-stat) and one heat range colder spark plugs and I still run around 191 degees depending on the heat and humidity.

You forgot to add that this was indeed taken by the passenger, on a closed course :D

FWIW,
My 2 MMs have the normal operating temp just below the halfway point (about the width of the needle) on the temp guage. Stock everything related to the engine.

Mine used to be 22. Then I changed fluids and added the Redline water wetter. Now it's at 21.

fastcar:burnout:

btw, I don't recommend the water wetter. My water pumped weeped out the hole for a while after putting the stuff in. That was scary, but then it seemed to self heal. If it could do that to a pump, imagine what it might try on a head gasket or something else
