Well, I have had it with Points and a condenser. I am tired of cleaning, gapping, re-gapping, replacing (although only $20 annnually) I am finally making the move to a conversion kit.
Just looking for some comparison among Pertronics Ignitor II ($110), Crane ($65) and Accel ($60). I am sure there are others.
Who has used what and which are you most pleased with?

Cant comment on this.
I can tell you I installed Points, condenser, etc in my 1959 Cadillac back in 1999 and all is still well.

Hey Zack,
If you drive them, they need regapping, and replacment annually. Guess it's just an old habit to pick up a set every Spring.
I did not drive the Thunderchicken too much last year and this, so I am still on those points & condenser. Just lining up for next Spring. I really need to do a full re-build on the engine, I just don't have the space.

Whats in that thing, the 390 FE?

You betcha'. FE, 390, 4 bbl 600 CFM Autolite 4100 carb. Requires Premium fuel. Only rated at 300 Hp. 3.00:1 rear end (I think it has 2.73's in it, miles are off). It's a dog. I have a set of 3.90's in the rafters, I'll pop those in some day.
Car weighs in at 4,500 pounds, which I think is a modest estimate.... Must be w/o fluids. Once I fill the 22 gallon tank, I am slow and low.
Engine internals have 485,627 on them, as well as the rest of the car. I just fixed the dash lights last night, been driving me nuts for 6 years.

I would be surprised if that car weighed more than 3800 pounds.
Petronic has been around for a long time - at least 30 years doing point conversions for automotive/marine applications. I would start with them.

And if the Pertronix goes south, throw the points back in.

Just save the points and condenser incase there's ever an EMP attack! They'll be quite handy then...

I've talked about this for years, there are already lots of us that have prepared for such an occurrence, but more who have not, and they will be the hardest to convince.
I've put the petronics in all my old cars and just about all of my customers cars, the only real differance with the petronics 2 is that it is supposed to be good for higher rpm range. the only thing with the petronics is that there will be an extra wire coming out of the distibutor that goes to the poss. side of the coil, so if you have a 100 point car it will be incorrect , but it does make a big differance on the car, biggest is you dont ever have to mess with them,

I installed Pertronics in a 76 Honda back around 1978 and never had any trouble. I traded the car in 82 for a Mustang, but it was still running fine (ignition wise). Much better than the constant points/condenser/distributer cap replacements I was doing more than once a year before the Pertronics.
I was happy with them.

Thanks Guys, As the Thundechickens 390 is incapabel of seeing RPM over 5,500... guess I don't need the Ignitor II.
And there is no way this is a pointed car, she's a driver.

I tried Petronics and they are OK, not a bad product but for a really good set up get MSD. You can get a distributor, 6AL box and blaster II coil for a FE. i have had it in my Fairlane for 10 years never a problem. I just installed a MSD set up in my dads 61 Starliner and its great. You get better responce and fuel burn out of the car. It really wakes up an old Ford.:D
