You need to keep the 1:1.05 ration, front to back. On 16" steelies, I've used Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50 Winterbiters, for the last few years. The sizes are 2x 225/60-16 for the fronts, and 235/65-16 for the backs. I drive about 400km per week, and have the snows on from Nov - Apr. After 3.5 years, the backs finally wore out last year (mostly due to my right foot), and were replaced with a matching set. The fronts still have a LOT of tread left...

Buy something cheap and to which you won't become attached for winter driving. STOP DRIVING MARAUDERS IN THE SNOW!
Sorry! I could still cry every time I think of my first year with the MM before I got the winter beater. That is one season of salt roads I'll never be able to get back.
Just sad :(

In reply to Michael's question about snowtires I run Hankook IceBears (235/50/18,255/55/18) on stock wheels. I need the stock wheel to clear my brake calipers.

I definitely wouldn't drive a MM in Nova Scotia winters. Or Ontario, for that matter, way too much salt used. Up here in Alberia it gets too cold for salt to be as effective, so they put fine gravel down to help with traction. The downside is stone chips from hell on windshields and front bumpers. And it doesn't matter what time of year either, they don't pick all of it up in the spring so it just sits there and gets sprayed everywhere when someone drives out of the normal driving path. I get more stone chips in the summer from people talking on their cellphone while driving and swerving all over the road!
Anyways, I use 215-65R16 up front and 225-70R16 out back, it comes out to about the same ratio, give or take, and it won't bother traction control. I like to use narrower tires to bite into some of the deeper snow as we get some massive snowdrifts out here because the only thing between us and the mountains 300km away are a few oil wells and a herd of Buffalo.

I too use 215/65R16 front and 225/70R16 rear.
I use fancier rims.
