OK, it's time. Now we will have a good thread on this topic if it's the last thing I do:)
I tried reviving the best thread I could find on the subject in Shop Talk but it didn't exactly take off...
We all know why so many loath the EGR. They filthy up your intake with motor poop, heat the inlet charge, heat the engine compartment, and add more junk under hood. I want to take mine off for a cooler, denser mix. My car is an ANIMAL when first started. Anything I can do to keep it cooler after warm up is worth it to me.
We need discussion about:
1. Engine light/computer codes. Will taking it off throw any?
2. Computer tune. Does this need to be altered? If so, in what manner? what exactly is being done? There has been some talk of 'turning the EGR off' in the computer. Please explain how this is done. I'm surprised the tuner can do this.
3. After the EGR is 'turned off', and assuming the engine light is not on, will one still pass OBD II emission test? The one where they just plug in to check.
3. Driveability. Are there any problems? Is part throttle driveability or smoothness sacrificed?
4. Any other issues?
5. If you did this, how did you do it? Did you plug the manifold, what about the intake, where did you get the plugs?
6. MPG. DID YOU NOTICE A DIFFERENCE. Why should the egr change mileage? It's not suppose to be a mpg device.
If anyone thinks of other issues/questions please add.
If you have any experience with this mod PLEASE POST WHAT YOU KNOW!

Simply put, you will most likely not notice any difference with it there or gone.
A change from a 0 to a 2 is all that is required in the tune to prevent the CEl from coming on.
You can get the blockoff plate from karkraft.com or upr products.
As for gas mileage, I never paid attention to gas mileage in 6 years of ownership.
The only hard part to this mod is removing the EGR at the manifold and finding a cap with the right threads. (Pretty sure its a Flare cap (-10 or -12an))

I'm scratching my head. I thought I put this into community discussion to get more visibility... weird...

Thanks, Zack. Dez is removing it this week, while they finish the head work. He said he can't do the change to the tune. I thought they did a lot of SCT tune work, so that surprised me. BTW, what is a CEI?

You're going to Dez?....Go see Doug, he'll turn it off for you. Zack meant CEL, not CEl.

If you've pulled the intake off, you'll see more nasty crap on the inside coming from the PCV than from the EGR.
One reason the car is much stronger when first started is that it is running open loop until the engine is warmed up. It runs on values in a table instead of automatically adjusting for dynamic operating conditions (closed loop).
As for your specific ???'s
1. Yes, it will throw a code.
2. Yes, you can turn off EGR in the tune. If you have your tuner turn it off or if you have the Pro Racer's Package from SCT you can do it yourself. Not sure if you can do it with a Xcal.
3. Depends, some states' DMV have wised up and can tell if the EGR or rear O2 sensors have been turned off. Some just check for OBDII codes and leave it at that.
3 (again). Doubtful if part throttle operation is affected, as the EGR only operates at idle (closed throttle). If it is affected, the tuner could adjust for it.
4. Just capping off everything and keeping the parts for when you sell the car, as future owners may be in a place that is more restrictive with regards to emissions enforcement.
5. Check with Zack, he likes to do away with it. I'd rather keep it.
6. Shouldn't make a difference.
edit: I stand corrected... EGR apparently does operate at part throttle...

Zack meant CEL, not CEl.
Ah hah! Thanks, man. ;)

No more on mine. I'm using The Condensator. More than a filter, it catalytically filters out all the crap, and drops it into a container to throw out each oil change. It catches all sorts of nastiness.

Fordnut, I really appreciate your comprehensive response. I'm now ready for action
BTW, I want to make my car run on 'closed loop' permanently, if possible.:D

egr only comes in at part throttle, not idle...egr at idle will cause it to stall... its there to re-burn the exhaust gases for emmission.. it will set a cel if the tune isn't adjusted

No you don't. You want the adjustments as the car warms up to take place. For example go snip your IAT wire and see how it runs when it warms up. The car will think it's -40F and run pig rich.

YOU owe me a Bourbon AND a Computer!!!!

Fastcar;
I note that you are from Massachusetts. That state has a strict emissions inspection protocol that could cause your car to fail inspection if any part of the emission system is altered or disabled. The state's computer would certainly detect this for several reasons. No data or a flag indicating the EGR was turned off. A visual inspection would confirm it.
A re-installation of the EGR system would then be necessary plus a collection of data by the on board computer so that the test device, which reads stored data, can make a valid test.
Although emissions test is done every other year on late model cars I would think that disabling the EGR system would not increase performance. At worse this action could generate a fine because the emissions system was intentionally disabled.
Check into it before you make any changes. FWIW
Use key words "Emissions Testing Massachusetts" for a Yahoo search.
