While hanging about and learning gobs from Al Papitto at Boss330 Racing, he showed me this piston.

This is from a Lightning who's owner tried to 'do it himself'. He over-revved his freshly rebuilt engine and detonated so bad, be blew the dish right out of the top of the head. The upward moving piston slammed into the downwardly thrusted valve and they MELDED TOGETHER from the extreme heat.
This truck was DRIVEN to the shop over 200 miles in this condition. Obviously, the rest of teh motor was ready for the recycle guy to pick it up after this failure.
When I first saw it from across the shop I thought it was some kind of specialty piston. Al said 'Yeah, it's special alright' and told me the story!

Al is such a great guy. I remember years ago when I had my Cobra I was talking to him about his Cobra (exact same car).
He ran a 10sec pass and I was amazed. He then told me it was N/A. I was amazed. Then he told me is had a stock cat-back. I was amazed. Then he told me it was a 5.4L. I was amazed!
I was pretty impressionable when I was 18 years old!
A good friend of mine has one of his motors in his Lightning.

He's still running that car. 5.4L 17-1 compression NA 9.30. unf@cking-believable. I'm double 18 and am amazed!!!

+1 for Al P... i drove over 12 hours each way to drop my motor off at his door. He does amazing work and man does he know some ****.
I feel pretty well versed in modular speak, but around him i feel dumb HAHA
and both of his Cobras are nice as can be... not to mention his wife Cathy is very nice

I'm getting that warm fuzzy feeling again. The cudos for Al P. is extremely comforting, after putting my engine in his hands.

Impressive. I know Tom is very happy with his results.
Keep in mind building an engine to last 10 seconds and building an engine to last 100,000 miles is two comletely different things.
Many a person has put "race proven" parts on their street car only to find out they were only "race proven" and not street proven.

17-1 compression, how is it not a diesel?

Yeah, but if I built it , it would be closer to the 10 sec. build, rather than a 100,000 mile build.
I'm quite sure he knows the difference more than I. :bows:
But I can still build a Chevy with my eyes closed, too bad I don't drive one anymore.

The throttling system meters air intake vs fuel intake AND it also burns gasoline... not diesel!

Agree'd....
My last 347 Lasted me 35k miles. It ran like a champ but you can't expect race engines to last forever. (Especially 570rwhp ones) The new 347 I did is a hair milder with less compression but I think it'll last a little longer. It made 520rwhp on a Dynomite loaded dyno and we're guessing she'll make about 550rwhp when I get her on a dynojet.
Point is I don't expect her to go 100k between engines. Just last 3 years. Thats all I ask...hehehhe 160k on her too. Just getting started.

well im not tryin to make the motor last 100k, but more than 35k would be nice LOL
im expecting ~650-700 rw on pump and trying to crack 900 on C16 and spray though an automatic. I might not get there, but it'll be a hell of a street car none-the-less
and there uis a reason i drove so damn far for him... hell Modular PowerHouse is half that distance.

Don't mind me, I've just been bighting my nails down to the knuckles, as of late. But perfection takes time..:alone:. I'm trying to think of it as getting a New Marauder again....we're going to have to get used to one another again.
