Hey everyone. A couple weeks ago when i got ma 'rauder, my friend told me how the MMs could chirp the tires in 2nd. I don't do it often but when i do it basically just floor it when it gets to about 3500 - 5500 RPM i shift from 1 to 2. Nice chirp. Done it only a few times (not for showing off.....) (..............). I am aware of the Heavy Duty trans and drive shaft, just wondering if chirping and the occasional neutral drop could seriously mess up the trans/dr shaft. Thanks

I did some neutral drops in my '89 Olds Cutless Supreme. That's because it was nothing but a peice of s**t.

I test drove 2 stock MMs and they both chirped 2nd gear when manually shifted. Another good reason to love this car.

LOL yes call me when it fails, also its not real wise to manually shift this car either, the 2/3 is not to bad but the 1/2 is not advisable.

uh-oh! .. hey Dennis are you talking about upshifting, downshifting or both?

upshifting a WOT 1/2 upshift is not good let the trans shift on its own

Thanks, Dennis--you probably saved me a tranny--does it hurt to consistantly start out insecond at medium throttle and smothly shift to 3rd ?

Leave the car in drive if you start out in second you lock first out

For a junior member, what is a neutral drop? Describe it in a few steps.

Thanks

That where you put the car in neutral, rev it up, and with the motor still revving, you put the trans in drive. This will roast the tires.

A couple of these, and your rear end is broke, and the transmission is leaking fluid all over the ground.

Not a healthy thing to do for a drive train.

John: You already ate a transmission. Leave this one alone. It's not something you want to do anyway!

Go To Hertz

Rent a Grand Marquis or Town Car, (use amex plat or get full ins)

Go to unpopulated area with nice new smooth tarmac

Traction Control Off

Reverse to 10MPH

Shift to Neutral, hold selector lever off detent, Tach motor to rev limiter, back off 350 to 500RPM,

Shift Quickly to 1st, and jerk wheel slightly to the right to unload inside tire

(for variety go hard lock right or left for posi donuts)

or so I've heard....

FYI..finesse power braking will give similar results and is much less likely to leave you calling the 800 # from east buttstab telling the hertz tow driver" I dunno...the car doesn't move anymore"

Sorry Hertz

Dennis,
I've been wondering about this. The tranny article on TCCOA mentions it's not such a big deal to manually shift the later trannies, what's your thoughts on this? Is this primarily an upshift or downshift issue? I read the article before leaving for Sweden so I apologize if I missed something obvious... I can't reread the article as the computer here in the Library does not have PDF viewing capabilities.

Also, would I be off target by thinking the MM PCM employs torque management during upshifts and this is why we get rubber in 1-2 on a manual 4500 RPM upshift and not necessarily on a Drive WOT upshift at 6000 RPM? (ie. more torque management at 6000 RPM upshifts than 4500?)
