I hit 60,000 miles yesterday in the MM. I was on a longer trip with my grandmother and wife... while on the highway I started to notice a little bit of noise from my rear-end. This is the first time my grandmother has been in my car so the radio was off. The noise could've been there all along but just never noticed until yesterday.

Should I be concerned? Gears are in the plans in the next few months so I guess if anything is really screwed up then it will be addressed at that time.

Do you have aftermarket mufflers? If so they may not have the weights on them. I get a low hum sound between 50-65 mph, I can clearly hear it when I press on the gas and as soon as I let off it goes away or get passed a certain speed it goes away.

I don't hear it with the radio on but at cruising speeds in o/d with the radio off and windows up I can hear it. Mine has been doing it for almost 2 yrs, I rarely even notice it anymore.

could be a couple of things...

Is the Marauder an 03? Have you done the axle recal? If not I'm willing to bet your axles are shot. My MM was all the way up till 1/2 of the 03's and it chewed the axles up pretty good.

If its a clunk when you turn, ect. check your control arm bolts. I had 1 loosen up on me.

not a clunk.... just a slightly noticeable metal to metal rubbing noise coming from the rear-end.

I've had plenty of cars with aftermarket gears and that's what it sounds like. Just a slight hum that increases with speed.

I guess I will have to put the car in the air and spin the rear-end and see if I can hear anything.

What is this axle recall? I bought it used less than a year ago with 53K miles. The couple that owned it also own an auto repair shop. I know the car was well taken care of and stock as it can get..

Yup....Its the axles....It'll get louder too...

Some go early some last a little longer but unless its had the axle recall on it I'm betting you need it done. The kit I think from Ford is about 350$ and comes with new axles and bearings because your bearings will be chewed up too.

damnit.... I guess my gear install will be a few hundred more than expected. Sucks.

i had mine re-done at 60,000 (300A) and it turned out to be the pinion gear bearing, axles bearings and axles them selves. i read somewhere that the heavy duty axles (police interceptors and marauders) were made from a bad batch of steel which was actually softer than the bearings themselves. i was able to get the old axles and wow what a groove! make sure that if you take it to the dealer or if you do it yourself do everything, all bearings, seals and axles shafts as everything went bad at once on me, thank god for the extended warranty.

What is this axle recall? It wasn't a recall, it was a TSB. TSB 03-05-05 applied to Panthers made before January of '03 for axles that were not properly hardened. If your axles are shot, I doubt you have any recourse now unless you have an extended warranty. The only other option is to buy the TSB kit, which goes for somewhere around $300 I believe and includes new axles, bearings, seals, etc..

My dealer told me the TSB kits are no longer available and the few he had left over he sent back to Ford over a year ago so you may have to buy the components separately??

It is not unusual for higher ratio gears, even stock, to make some gear whine. My 03, from the factory, hummed above 50 mph. It may have always done this and you didn't notice. The factory manual for this car says that "some" rear diff gear whine noise is "normal" and should not be rectified by the dealer. Axles are a different story. You should check those ASAP before you do potentially more damage by driving on them. You are going to load up your oil w/ metal, if you haven't already, and have to replace all bearings and potentially carrier gears, in the rear, if there are a lot of shavings that have been in there for a while.

Damn, just the other day my friend sat in the back seat for the 1st time and asked me what that noise was. Never heard it before and now I do, Im kinda worried. I have an extended warranty, but I dont want to use it, I get the cash back if I dont use it. Where can this TSB kit be bought, any dealer??

Motorcraft makes a 90W-140?

The differential takes 2.2L, which is just under 2.5 qts.
