Somebody help Bobby...!
Does anyone else remember the reference to Steve Babcock saying he liked Mobil-1 5W-30 in the Marauder? I swear it was in the Trilogy Forum, from way back when a number of members went to their shop and met with Lidio, Mr. Babcock and others...I've done all the searches and I can't find it...I'm seriously thinking of abandoning my favourite Pennzoil and going with Mobil-1, especially now that Mobil-1 is factory fill on the Mustang Cobra R...I recently found out that Pennzoil owns and still sells Slick-50 :nono: , so the rest of their products are now tarnished in my eyes... :(

RF Overlord,
I don't remember the reference, but Mobil-1 now comes in 0W-20 and is designed for 5W-20 applications. I would probably use 5W-30 if I lived down South or ran with a lot of mods, but in either weight it's great stuff, imho. I've been running my beater, a 1997 Mercury Tracer with Mobil-1 5W-30 since 15,000 miles, and it's getting close to 200,000 miles without burning, leaking or using any oil between changes. I change every 8-10,000 miles in that car.

I pulled my favorite dealer tech aside last time the car was up on the lift for the oil pressure sender swap. I asked him what he felt about the 5W20 switch... he shrugged and said that personally he would stick with 5W30 and that he felt more comfortable with that. I'll have to ask him what he feels about 0W20.
Probably no big deal either way. Recall that the 2 numbers are simply reference viscosities at 2 standard temperatures (one cold, one hot) and that, like dyno curves and peak hp/tq numbers, they do not show what happens above or below those temperatures (ie. the nature of the viscosity curve). Lately, I'm hearing that Mobil 1 tends to behave more like a 20 weight rather than a 30 weight at temperatures higher than what the second number is taken at. In other words, at the second reference temperature Mobil 1 will rate the same viscosity as a 30 weight oil at that temp, but as you get hotter, the curve will more closely resemble a 20 weight oil's temperature/viscosity curve.

Maybe that's why Mr. Babcock said he liked Mobil 1... :D
As far as 0W-20 goes, um...thank you very no... :P

This is the original thread, I think, but the relevant post has been deleted.

/Steve, I thought that was the correct thread also. I can't figure WHY that part of it would have been deleted, but I think you're right...I know I saw it, I just thought I couldn't find it again...well, I think I'm a-gonna go with the Mobil 1, anyroad... YEE-ha!...

I'm not sure if you've seen it or not, but Amsoil makes a full synthetic in 5w20. I went back and forth with mobil 1 (and what weight) or factory, then decided to just go the Amsoil route when I happened upon it at the parts store.

Don't be afraid to use Mobil1 in any form. I'm using 0w-30 in my 406 with no problems, and have been for 3 years now.
RF??!!

Sigh...well, look at it this way: some of the newbies haven't had the pleasure of participating in an oil thread, and we haven't had one here for a while, so I thought "what the heck"...

Which store did you find it in...I always thought Amsoil was more of a mail order product.....to bad our apparatus doesnt use 5w20 we always have a couple gallons of oil laying around....

I also saw that you can get Motocraft 5w20 FULL synthetic. My local oil change place showed me a bottle.
