The shop manual says to pull the tank. I know it has been done without this, what's the easiest way? Driveshaft removal? Drop tank partially? Any special cautions?

Just recently replaced mine with a GT pump for my supercharger install. It's a piece of cake and I didn't even have to take anything else off the car. Just jacked the rear up, slid underneath, undid about 8 10mm bolts (if memory serves) that hold the entire assembly in place and then slid it out. It takes a little bit of jockeying and positioning but it's really not hard at all. I think I had the whole thing out and the new pump wired, installed in the tank and buttoned up in like 45 minutes, and that included time to BS with my brother and drink a coke. :)

When Jason replaced my fuel pump he put the car on the lift and then pulled the PS rear wheel and loosened both straps. The one on the PS nearly all the way to drop the tank down as much as possible. Make sure you have a nearly empty tank. The most difficult part is to get a very long ice pick type of tool to reach in from the PS rear wheel well to disconnect the wire connector for the fuel pump and then of course the 8 bolts on the fuel pump ring. You might want to call Jason for some direct tips. Good Luck.

I have to agree, I've done a few (including mine) without removing anything extra off the car. Yes it's like the rubix cube when it's unbolted but very doable in an hour.

^^^This is true...No need to loosen the tank...
Just let the rear end hang as far down as it can...
I loosened the exhast, and took it off the pass. side hanger (tail pipe)) , so I could move the exhaust tip to the left a little, to help with the extraction...
Good Luck...

I have a trilogy and thought about upgrading my fuel pump. What gains do you get besides more gas? And will a tune be required once you get things all back together? I dont want to replace it just because and not receive any type of gain....

Brian, Call Ed (Blackmobile). He's being modest. He's done at least half a dozen I know of and talked Randy thru his.
He did mine is about an hour and a half in my driveway.
I helped Juno with his, but I have a hard time with the confined spaces.
It's not hard.
Good Luck.

The only extra thing I had to unbolt was the hanger on the passenger side meg to give me more room.

Thanks for the refresher!
Since I did not make it to Woodward (I was going to have Lidio install this and retune while I was there.) I'm going to tackle this myself. Sometime, soon.
Looks easy enough,. just need to burn off some fuel.

It's out, being modified now. Pics coming up soon of the "special" fuel system.
Removal tips...
Make sure you're near empty.
Pull the nut all the way off on the passenger side strap, loosen the driver side. The stud came out on mine instead of the nut.
The electrical connector is above the frame crossmember, kind of hard to get to.
The other electrical connector was a real pain. After several tries with "special" tools I finally just dropped the tank a little so I could get my hand in there to get it loose. I had to pry down on the tank to get it to move. The release clip is on the top, press down on it to release.
Make sure you've got the right size special release tool for the fuel line. I had a tool for AC lines but it wouldn't fit the fuel lines so I had to make a quick trip to NAPA for a tool.
Pull the bolts out, then wrangle the whole assembly out. It's kinda hard to get it out, wouldn't hurt to pull the driveshaft for working space but it's not really necessary.

I didn't have to touch my tank at all, although the wiring harness was a PITA to get some slack from to unplug it (the one on top of the crossmember.)

The only gain you get is no fuel starvation at high RPM's when S/C'd.

+1
In most cases, it is a fuel "insurance mod".

I dunno how you got this connector loose without dropping the tank a little.

Got the flange/hat back from the welding shop. It warped when it was welded, so they used heat, hammers, pliers, vise to get it back straight.

A little scotchBrite & acetone:

Putting it together:

The GT pumps are a little smaller diameter so som shims were needed. I used some strips of silicone tubing:

Used the high quality solid type clamps:

Got it all together:
