View Full Version : Unsual rear area noise - not gear related.

This is something that started about a year or so ago, but has gotten a bit more noisy recently. I did do a search here (as well as on CVN), but couldn't come up with anything that fit.

Here's the problem....whenever I make a reasonably hard right turn from the street onto a driveway that has a slight elevation to it, I get what can only be described as a metal to metal sound that eminates from the rear area of the car. You can be going as slow as you want while doing this, and it will still occur.

My car was in for work recently (getting the rear gears replaced under extended warranty), and they said they would look for anything obvious regarding the sound I was hearing. Their cursive review yielded nothing.

As it turns out, I soon noticed a leak under the rear diff area after the gear change. When I went back this Monday (Aug 25), they found the pinion seal needed re-replacement (I guess the guy tore it when installing the gears). Since I was still complaining about the original noise I've been talking about here, they had their most experienced tech go out with me - especially since they couldn't reproduce the noise themselves. In short order, I had the tech going, "Oh yeah - now I hear it!"

They finally gave me a loaner car so I could get to work. By the end of Monday, they had tried a few small items, but couldn't track down the cause of the noise...so far - a body bushing, shock absorber bushings, exhaust system. They couldn't work on it Tues. So, here it is today (Wed), and I guess the car is still playing 'stump the tech'. This agency (Holman) is pretty reputable, and I've had good success with them regarding most car items, but this one is going to be tough dog I guess.

BTW, I did do the obvious prior to all this and emptied the trunk of everything, thinking the noise was from in there.

My mind runs wild with all sorts of potential things, i.e., bushings in the Watts linkage or rear control arms, rear air bags (not exactly metal to metal), strap on the gas tank, broken frame...:help:

I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced anything like this, and if so, what you may have found.

Thanks guys!

Aw, c'mon guys! You mean to tell me I'm the only one with this problem? I know it's not the most interesting subject matter out there, based on the fact that only 33 (so far) have viewed this thread so far.

All of you have been one of the best MM bodies-of-knowledge I have experienced to date.

Would appreciate any thoughts on the matter....

Maybe I should change the title to "Sex in Maruader City" or something similar. :)

going into driveways turning right

I had the noise, now....only to remember what remedied it.

.
I think that when I put on the rear control arms it may have fixed the problem.

I'll keep thinking

Look for a shiney spot underneath, should indicate something is rubbing.

Just got a call back from the dealer working on the car. Their top guy could find no suspension problems. They even called in someone else from their sister agency. At this point, they have all agreed that it is likely a body seam that is causing the noise. And of course, that's not covered under extended warranty.

Based on this new info, has anyone had a body seam problem similar to this?

Randy,

Although I'm no where near as knowledged about these cars as some of these members here are, I can tell you that your type of question has been posted repeatedly in the past and it was a "stumper" than. As you can see in my signature, I'm on my second Marauder, and both have done what your describing. When it did it on my first one, I brought it in to 2 dealers, they had it for days, same results as you got. Not wasting my time bringing current one in.

Our sounds if you will, may not be exact, but when it comes to our suspensions and rear ends Ford themselves have no clue what it is. Dont have them rip the car apart, I think you may regret it. Try to deal with it as agravating as that may be to read and do, and enjoy your ride, thats not the only sound you will be pissed about believe me.

Just do a search here on rear end and suspension noises. Popping, squealing, Unbelievable!

I like Fords but when it comes to the Marauder engineering, I have to say I'm slightly dissapointed but still love the car. Just my opinion.

The only thing that comes to mind is that when you turn right, up on an incline...the left rear tire supports the heaviest load as the front of the car moves up the incline....

Hence, I would look at that side (left rear) for the problem...Maybe the parking brake/wheel bearing...

Hope this helps...

Good Luck...

Without hearing the noise I can't say. But I had a metal scraping noise coming from the right rear of my Marauder. Jacked it up, took off the wheel, and found that the brake backing plate was rubbing on the rotor. Easy fix, I got lucky. Now on my 94 9C1 I had a loud scraping, chatter coming from the right rear. After countless attempts my buddy finally figured out the problem. The parking brake on a Caprice is actually a drum type brake inside the rotor. The shoes were loose, thus causing the chatter. I opted to remove the shoes. Guess what? No more noise. I'm not sure how the parking brake on a Marauder is, but if it is like my Caprice, I would take a look at that. Good luck!
