There are some nice hotels in Astoria near Laquardia airport. They are also close to the triboro bridge which will put you on 2nd ave and 125th street. Thats close enough to get to the races. As for parking, I suggest a lot. If you park on the street and the meter runs out they will tow your car away as soon as the ticket is placed on the window. The city is on the take and you dont want to head to the impound lot to get your car back.
It will probably cost you about $35-$50 for parking for the day. Well worth it.

Any idea which one I should start with?

If you want to stay in Manhattan, you could try the Excelsior Hotel On 81st and CPW just across the street fom Central Park and the Natural History Museum. There are parking garages nearby. It's a nice neighborhood with lots of restaurants and shopping on nearby Columbus Ave. ( My old neighborhood...74th and CPW) Sounds like you'll have fun.:)
