View Full Version : Triton V10 is Home...PICS!
This thing is HUGE
Here it is:

I love Modular engines, because they are, well, 'MODULAR'!
I was concerned about the oil and water neck on the drivers side:
Stock Water & Oil cooler pic:

So far so good... er....Oil pan
Stock vs Marauder:

Stock Marauder pan bolted up:
http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/4/0/4/V10Project011.jpg
So, to get this thing in the car, Im going to order another Marauder Oil pan.
Then I will lay the v10 pan out on cardboard and spray some paint through the holes, creating a template. Once I have that, I can cut the front section off the old Marauder pan and weld it onto the new Marauder pan to fit.
As is, the V10 pan will hit the crossmember and is way too deep (9.5" vs 6.25 on the MM)
A small adjustment to a stock MM oil pick up tube and the engine will be in the car.
I must admit Im scared of the electrical wiring needed for this to be a success. I have the best brains working to see if the Marauder computer has the extra drivers built in to run 2 extra cylinders. If so this will be much easier than I thought.
If not, I will have to adapt the V10 computer to run the engine and other essential MM functions, and most likely buy a stand alone Bauminator 4R70W transmission controller.
Ill keep everyone in the loop :banana2:
Good luck....(I think you'll need it)

Was it a 2V?
This is a 3V, much more involved, and is drive by wire.
Thanks for the reassurance, Im gonna REALLY need it here. :D

Hey buddy, get that rascal slapped in Prozak and bring it on down to Marauderville!
Wouldnt it be cool if I had Logan Motorsports build me a custom Carbureted intake for this thing and went that route?
Oh god, so it begins

How about using the MM TB for non drive-by-wire.
I know this: The PCM is the one that flat and has 3 plug ins.

Just a question....will the new fabbed up oil pan hold enough oil for the v-10?

I may find a pcm and wiring harness from an older 2v V10. That way I can keep the computer in the stock location.

Correct me if I'm wrong. I am sure somebody else here saw it too - a long time ago. It was Car and Driver or MotorTrend that had a propane-powered Triton V10 in a Crown Vic that made astronomical horsepower and weighed nearly as much as a V8 car.

magindat - There's been one put in a Vic. If they can do it, you can do it.
Actually there have been several; including a shoppe in CA that did the conversion for LEAs (Law Enforcement Agencies).
Then there was the Galaxie endeavor a few years back started by a CrownVic.net member. $$$$$ effort that stopped when the individual lost his job and had to liquidate.
*Will dig thru old bookmarks to see if I can find some specifics.

I tell you what...those cast iron exhaust manifolds don't look too shabby!
They remind me of a less pronounced version of the old 427 cast iron manifolds...nice individual tubes sweeping back into a common manifold.
If they fit the Maruder's chassis, maybe get them extrude honed and coated..:dunno:

Zack I hope your writing down notes for this install cause if all goes well your going to have a lot of people interested in doing something like this.
Hell I've already been thinking about it as the next step when my motor decides to retire.
Zach,
What are the internals on the v-10? Forged Crank? Powder pistons and rods?
Good luck Dude!! This is the best project in a long time!!!!!!

From peering into the engine from the bottom, it is a forged crank with Powdered metal rods and alloy pistons.
Im pretty sure Im gonna switch to a 2003 V10 Computer, rid myself of the drive by wire and be able to keep the PCM control of the transmission.
I just ordered another oil pan, I have to buy a band saw from Sears tonight to get that done
Once it is set in the car, I can address the wiring and any intake changes that need to be made.
The only thing I am in the dark about is the Variable cam timing (cam phasers). With the earlier PCM, im wondering if the actual VCT hard parts need to be removed

I agree with Joe, nice looking exhaust manifolds.

would be totaly bad ass if you could make this a kit! you sell kit, buyer suppys engine
Zack,
While you are chopping up the oil pan, why not widen it to get an extra quart or two?
Zack,

Im not chopping it up really, just welding the front section of a pan onto the other pan.
I want this to be as simple as possible so It is convincing to others that this can be accomplished by a regular guy in the garage.
The Modular engines tuck the crank way into the block, so extra oil capacity is as simple as overfilling (as referenced by the dipstick)
You can fit 7 quarts into a stock Marauder pan and the oil wont even crest over the top.

Probably one of the most interesting and challenging MM projects the net has seen in a long time. Most interesting. What HP do you think you can get? Keep us informed and plenty of pictures. You are going to bring it to SSHS8???

From peering into the engine from the bottom, it is a forged crank with Powdered metal rods and alloy pistons.
I see that it is an 8 bolt crank/flywheel which means a forged crank in an 8 cylinder....so does that follow for a 10 cylinder?
The only thing I am in the dark about is the Variable cam timing (cam phasers). With the earlier PCM, im wondering if the actual VCT hard parts need to be removed
It would be great if you could keep the cam phasers active for maximum torque and HP across the engine's rpm range.
BTW: Did you try to stick a magnet on the exhaust manifolds to confirm that they are S.S.? If they are...that is really cool for a truck engine!

I just realized this engine does not have cam phasers! Only the 4.6 and 5.4 3V engine have them. Life just got easier!
