What would be the cause of the drivers side door lock responding very slowly when locking or unlocking using any of the following methods. Keypad, drivers side switch, passenger side switch, and key fob.

At first I thought it might just be the switch, like when the window switch goes bad and the window has a tough time rolling back up. But since it happens using all these methods it has me thinking it is something else. I have not gotten around to pulling the panel off to see, thought I would ask here before I started that.

The lock selenoids are going bad.

Mine does the same thing. All other door locks pop up and down with FORCE.... the drivers side just kind goes up and down in a lazy manner... if at all... sometimes I need to hit the button a few times.

Replace the solenoid. :/

I haven't bothered to look at prices and such, report back if you do.

It is what some members here have stated as "Giving up the ghost". I replaced my left side ones under extended coverage. If you are down this way, I'll put it in for you.

Thanks for the info, anybody have any pics of how to install? If not any idea how much a dealer may charge for this?

Thanks for the offer Brian but I'm afraid I won't be back in Miami anytime soon.

It is easy. I had to replace the rivit on a couple of them including a member here.

All you have to do is:
remove the door panel,
punch and drill out the rivit on the side of the door,
unscrew the 3 latch screws (impact screwdriver not needed)
unhook from the latch,
unplug from the harness.

Installation is reverse from above. I just hope that you have a rivit gun.

Can you get a weekend off to drive down this way?

If you don't have a rivet gun just use a nut & bolt.

The rivets they are held on with (if they are like all other Fords) are HUGE! You can't put them in with a normal rivet gun and my local dealership doesn't even keep the rivets - startling since these things must have to be replaced with great regularity.
Mine is on the way out as well and I do not look forward to changing it. I've done it on the Tempo and it wasn't much fun. So much so, in fact, that I've never fixed them on the dually. I just didn't want to get into that whole "rivet" problem again.

 I can't believe that they don't have the rivets as the same rivets hold the door glass to the regulators.

I guess it depends on the dealer.

Some actuators come with a new rivit. If not, I use the shorter one from a regulator job.

But what kind of gun do you put it in with? None of the guns you can buy retail go anywhere near the size of these.

Actually, I use a Rivet Tool. It looks like this:
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200305349_2003053 49

Interesting story. I bought a rivet tool from a place and it worked for one rivet and broke on the 2nd one. I called and they shipped me another one and it did the same thing.

That is why you replace the rivet with a nut, bolt & Locktite!

I did a few windows in some Fords and the rivets are HUGE... but I have a nice rivet gun and I just stepped them down a size. No problems.

Was this the one you bought ?:

I bought this one and the funny thing is the first time I used it the body cracked at the head, I called and they sent me a second one (they didn't want the broken one sent back) which I have used a couple times with no problems.
I don't think this riveter likes the steel rivets like Ford uses, it works fine with aluminum rivets.

It does not sound too bad except the rivet part as I have never had to deal with that. Is the tool you posted a link to used for removing and installing the rivet? I don't have a drill or anything.

I don't work on the weekends so I could drive down but it would have to be a drive down Saturday back up Sunday. Cost of gas on 16 or so hour round trip I'm wondering if it is easier to get it fixed down here. I'm trying to save my vacation time as much as possible so I can take sometime off around Christmas.

I'll take apart my door and look at it. Maybe I can find a shop who won't charge too much if I already have the door panel off.

It looks like that one except I bought mine through Latemodel Restoration Supply.

The rivet tool is to install it. The drill removes it.

The offer is on the table so you can decide.

It used to be possible to leave the mount riveted to the door and snap the solenoid out of the mount in pre 98 cars. It required that you got both hands in the door to keep from ripping the mount loose. Did they change this?

It changed to where it is next to impossible to achieve this.

BTW, I used to do what you stated when the actuators went bad on my 89 Mustang. Thank goodness for plastic brackets.

Thanks, I'm going to see whether this is something I can deal with for a few months till I'm down that way or not. It worked a bit better today so I'll probably take you up on that offer.:)
