Hey guys I want to build a custom sub box to mount up on the shelf of the trunk. I know I have seen a pic or two of this being done. I'm thinking of two 10'' subs with a port in between them.

I'm wondering what the best strategy is for mounting it in there, taking into consideration the piece of metal that mounts the spare, and the 2 plugs that seem to go into the fuel tank. Also what are the preffered materials to use? I would like to keep it as lightweight as possible, but whatever. Any suggestions or pics, please post. :help:

You should send at PM to Magindat...he seems to be the Marauder stereo Guru. I have seen a few really nice set ups on here as well...check the photo section.

Rich knows his stuff but I believe that I have the nicest stereo among everyone here.

well there are diferent ways you can actually go about doing this. a basic box you can just make out of MDF and build it to fit on top of the shelf just as described. there are also diferent ways of making it stay up there, everything from vercro on the bottom of the box to actually straping it to the back of the seat.

the best looking option, but the most expensive and hardest to work with is the fiberglass option. it might also be the lightest option if weight is your issue. with fiberglass you actually have a wider option in design and size of the box. if you have the time or the money or both, this option is my personal favorite.

you shouldnt have too manny issues with 2 10s since there are even many aftermarket options that will fit the deck, this way you avoid building or having the box built for you. i have seen 3 10" subs on the deck and still room to spare. if done right you can put in a 12 as well.

You better have the nicest stereo for 14 grand, hah.

And Sanco, yeah I was considering fiberglass, but is probably harder to work with. Do you have any examples of aftermarket fiberglass boxes for CV/GM/Marauders that fit up there? I was unable to come up with any.

I have a hifonics 1600w amp pushing two 12'' alpine Rs, but the ported QLogic box they are in is way to massive for any usable trunk space, and not to mention the weight-my cars ass sags bad when its parked.

And do you think 12s are possible up there? I measured somewhat earlier today and it looked like about 11.5'' of height in there from the shelf to the bars that run across, for the trunk hinge asssembly.

That 14K includes Eclipse DVD/MP3/nav, 2 changers, and iPod. Steering wheel interface, Monster Cable interconnect, JL Audio 300/4 and 500/1 amps, JL Audio CS components in the doors and CX coaxials in the rear, 3 JL Audio 10w3v3's and an extremely custom trunk with Varad led lighting. It usually drops jaws. I have a cost value of about $8,000 in equipment but the retail value plus installation easily will double that. I wanted to only do it once so I went all out and bought everything first.

The head is an Eclipse AVN-6610 dual DVD drive touchscreen. No pics yet.

Glad you like the trunk - see, I told you.

Very nice, I would just hate to have a flat tire considering no room for a spare or jack. :D

I havn't had a spare or jack in my mustang for 6 years. Its called towing insurance. :) its like a dollar a year and covers me if I get stranded.

I think that he has the spare/ jack in the trunk floor and it's covered by the wooden top that has the Gods head on it.

i do not have any examples of it :( . what i can tell you is that i have tried building the box up on the shelf for my 12" JL W6 and i learned a lot from that lol. first is that aldough you might think it is, the measure is not 11.5" you actually have more like 9.5-10" of space. the deck to the top trunk frame that sticks out just over the edge is what you want to measure, it sits lower than the tension bars. what this means is that you will have to have a short and wide box for a 12" sub to accomodate the backpressure the sub needs. i tried building a shallow box for my W6 and stuffing it with polyfill to make it "think" its a bigger box but the sound i got just wasnt working for me.

what you have to take into consideration is that a 12" sub like the W6 and type R needs about 1.25 cuft of air behind the sub to sound good. so you are looking at about 3 cuft total of space needed to accomodate the 12s. using polyfill and some carefull math work, you should be able to make it work, if you are making a ported box, than the math gets a little trickier. however with 2 12s i think a sealed would work just fine.

now you also have to understand that going from 2 12s to 2 10s is a pretty big leap, you are going to definatelly get a diferent response from the system. 10s are not going to be as loud, and they will be much tighter than the 12s, its nice for rock but IMO leaves more to be desired when you want some actual bass.

BAD MERC that is a NICE setup. i had the same subwoofer/amp setup in my previous car...arent those JL 10W1 and not the W3s?? i really hope that the person that sold you the system didnt tell you that those were W3 subs. btw if someone wants something similar to this done in Illinois, shoot me a PM i can set you up with some of my guys at ABT electronics (used to work there)

I had black amps but replaced them with silver. I sold the woofers to ME. They're 10w1v3's. The latest generation of 10w1.

BAD MERC, that is one hell of a setup, similar to what I would like to do, but I think 2 subs would suffice.

Thanks for your responses guys. Sanco, if its more like 9.5-10.5 inches, then how would you fit a 12 in there? And yea the 12'' type Rs require about a cubic foot and a half each. I love to have the ability to beat the block down with bass when I want to-but most of the time I have my bass knob real low, I don't like going deaf and beating my car up too much with all the vibrations.

It was nice meeting you today - I am still looking for pics from the show. The stereo would have been better if we didn't have the event speakers screaming right next to the car.

again im not a 100% sure since its been several months since i built my enclosure. but i definatelly know that if you measure from the torsion bars to the deck you will be off by an inch.

you can fit a 12 in there by firing it up instead towards the rear of the car. or you can fire it towards the back of the seat in an angle, or towards the rear of the car on an angle. the thing is when you do that, you need to adjust your geometry and calculations. if you are near the loop any time soon i would be more than happy to meet with you and show you exactly what im talking about and let you hear my setup.

what i would recomend in your case is going with maybe a single 12 sub that is powered correctly and in a sealed enclosure that is designed for that sub. this way it will be loud when you want it and quiet when you dont. also dynamat, dynamat, dynamat...i cant stress that enough. it makes a big diferance in how your trunk sounds at the end og the day.

PM me if you want it done right.

I can make 1 10" sound like 2-12's and keep the spare.

I can fit 4 10's on the deck and leave the trunk clear.

I build em here and ship em all over the US and they FIT!

Kenny's is nice. Look at Not5-0's, arejayess, bigdaddygangster.

You can go the whole trunk like kenny or just big bangin like jamal.

The best material to use in this car is 13ply furniture grade braced. In this car, the angle the woofer faces means nada. You're compressing the air in the trunk and ultimately the car is a 4th order bandpass.

Guys like Kenny and I have been at this for 20 years. Listen carefully.
