EAST ST. LOUIS --

--

Four men were killed Friday night on the westbound lanes of Interstate 64-55-70-in an accident that authorities initially said was caused by excessive speed.
Three of the victims are related to civic leaders in East St. Louis.
The accident occurred at 10:29 p.m. near Eighth and Trendley streets when a gray Mercury Marauder carrying the four victims struck a vehicle in front of it, burst into flames and then flew off the roadway. It landed underneath the collector-distributor lanes that lead to the Poplar Street Bridge.
The victims are Anthony N. Brooks, 31, of 129 Hillwood Drive in Belleville; Harry Hollingsworth III, 33, of Madison; Tramell Jackson, 20, of East St. Louis; and Thurmon Mumphard, 31, of East St. Louis.
Brooks was the nephew of Lonzo Greenwood, who is president of the East St. Louis District 189 school board. Brooks was taken to St. Louis University Hospital, where he later died, St. Clair County Coroner Rick Stone said.
Hollingsworth was pronounced dead at 12:38 a.m. at the scene. His death was the result of massive head injuries, Stone said. He was the son of Democratic Precinct Committeeman Harry Hollingsworth.
Jackson was the grandson of Councilman Eddie L. Jackson.
"The victims were traveling too fast for conditions, and the traffic in front of them had slowed down," Illinois State Police Trooper Ralph Timmins said. "They hit the back of the car in front of them, went underneath the car, then traveled off the interstate and-burst into flames. The car ended up underneath the highway."
Two of the victims were ejected, Stone said.
It was not immediately known who was driving. Police did not know where the victims had been or were going.
Timmins said the case is still being investigated by state police and East St. Louis police.
Contact reporter Carolyn P. Smith at 239-2503.

I have a friend who was an officer on the scene and he said it was one of the worst wrecks he has ever seen.

Sounds like they were driving it as they say "like they stole it!"

BTW, a "gray" Marauder???? :dunno:

No, they were not of our company. At the time of the accident we were still at Spiro's Greek Resturant.

I wasn't sure if they were on the forum. Thats what I meant. Evidently there were guns and a sizable amount of ammunition in the car as well and the fire department couldn't get close to the vehicle to put it out due to the exploding rounds.

And you know us cops, if it looks "gray" its "gray". To all my cop friends the wifes DTR is just "the red one.":D

Dont recall mentioning that they were "with us". Doesnt really matter who they were with does it? A human life is a human life regardless of what group they were with- so sorry you are offended by my offering thoughts and prayers to their families:confused:

You obviously do not know Ken, nor how to read closely.

As you say, you didn't suggest that they were with (us)...someone else did however. He didn't come off offended. Why even comment?

no cruz, I do not know Ken, I do however know how to read and he responded to MY quote. After posting however, I realized how it may mis-construed (as is often the case in internet discussion versus face to face), as a verbal stab at Ken. This was not my intention whatsoever and I am sorry if Ken or anyone else would feel that way. I enjoy this forum not only for its knowledgable members, but also for the comic relief it sometimes provides.:burnout:

I think that I can speak for most of us, at least all of US that I have met. We aren't that reckless. ***** happens, but that car was moving...

And yes, internet blogging doesn't get the voice inflection and I usually try to reread my posts to check that my posts mean what i am trying to say without offending. But obviously doesn't work every time, (plus I was in a hurry to get packed to get to breakfast and get on the road). That's why we gotta learn not to get offended by another's post unless we KNOW that the offense was meant. or we end up with WEB RAGE!!!:D Like road rage, set off by an unintentional act or comment. Can I take credit for that word??? :dunno:

Unless it is a Volvo.

This isn't the ad I was looking for but it is very similar:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFoKNCEaZho&feature=related

When I lived in ENgland they had the ads where the crash test driver would get in his volvo and crash into a tree and a building and then they ended with him crashing off a bridge coming to a stop gets out and walks away. Volvo Swedish for Safety (or some such slogan).

I can see the link though St. Louis etc...
