Going though some road construction I hit a bump and the rear of the car bottomed out a while ago. I checked when I got home and saw nothing looked damanged. Now my check eng light has started to come on if I am driving in the rain. I moved the wires and the hose on the box under the gas tank and after resetting the check eng light all seemed fine until it rained again. I also noticed that the gas milieage has gone dowm about a mile per gallon. I am thinking the box must have been hit when I bottomed out. What is the box for? Any part numbers? I am thinking about changing it to see if the problems go away.

Its for evaporative control.
Check for breaks in the hose, that will surely throw a code.

It is for the evaporative emissions system. There's a purge solenoid and cannistor in the cage under the trunk floor. It is held by rivets towrad the axle and nuts ans tuds toward the bumper.

Keep us posted.

The box you are referring to is part of the EVAP system. It is all about emission control. Chances are the vent valve is damaged. When commanded on it closes and the purge valve pulls the gas tank into a vac and monitors for a leak. If is see's too large of a leak or cannot command the valve it will set a code.

Well, the check eng light came on this morning going to work and it was not raining and I was not being tracked by a helicopter. There goes that theory. Took the car to a local repair place and they just said the code showed it was a fuel system vacuume leak. They played with gas cap and then checked under the hood. Found nothing. I still think it is the box under the gas tank. Don't want the shop to mess with it because I am sure they will charge a ton. Is there anyway for me to check the operation of the valve in there?

Learned something new today. Always wondered what it was.
