Well guys i think its time for me to regear the Merc. I know its an 8.8 Ford rear end and came stock with 3.55 gears and a LSD. I was wondering what would be the best up grade in gears form the OEM set up? I have heard that 3.73s, 3,90s and 4.10s are all good. Please help me make the right choice. Thanks

4.10's. You'll only lose 1 or 2MPG and will run about 200RPM's faster at speed.
IMHO, anything lower will be good for the 1/4 mile but bad for everyday driveability and your wallet.

I Have 4.10 an I like them. 3.55 to 4.10 is not that big a jump.

What about 3 90s? I heard that there was a group buy for gears awhile back. Im looking to keep my car drivable and still help it get up and go off the line.

Did anyone mention 3.90's???? NO
Like we said go with the 4.10's!

Get the 4.10's and a Tune, you will not be disappointed.
Anything less than 4.10's is not as big of a SOTP feel. But that is, JUST, my opinion.

Those of us that have gone with 4:10's speak with experience.
Do it, get the car re-tuned, you'll be pleased with the results.

4.10's
I've had 3.73's too. They helped, but nothing like the 4.10's.

Going from 3.55 to 3.73 or 3.90 isn't a big enough jump to be worth the expense in a car this heavy. As the others said, go to right to 4.10...that's the gear this car was meant to have from the factory until the bean counters shot it down.

Does anyone who has a 4.10 in their Marauder use it as a daily driver

4.10's will cost you a few mpg. Perpahs more if you don't keep your foot out of it!!
It is off the line MUCH better than stock. They do not call gears "The Poor Man's Supercharger" for a reason. ;)

The question not, how many people. But...WHO DOESN'T have 4.10's....LOL
I've averaged between 20-22mpg per tank with this car and 4.10's, my freeway speeds are around 75-80mph and alot of stop n' go in the city too.

^^^what KillJoy said^^^
When The Blackbird was our daily driver, you wouldn't even know it had 4.10s unless you mashed the loud pedal. If driven reasonably, MPG around town actually improved a tiny bit as we didn't have to boot it so hard to get it launched. Overall, perhaps a 1-2 MPG hit including highway driving. Very streetable.

I don't have 4.10s installed but that is because I haven't got to it yet.:D

Definitely get 4.10s. Don't forget the tune. The tune is just as important as the gears!

I have 35k on my DD MM with the 4.10's, I'd never swap them out. So go ahead and talk yourself out of installing 4.10's eventhough you have ample evidence from many long time owners that installing the 4.20's are one of the best upgrades you can do to your MM. :shake::shake::shake:

Sounds like 4 10s are the way to go. As far as gears do you guys have a preference? I have use 4 56s Motive gears on my Ram and now have 4 88s on my Jeep and have not notice the difference as far as quality. What do you guys have installed?

I believe most guys use ford racing gears, but I have the motive gears, no complaints from me.

How difficult and how expensive is it to have a mechanic upgrade my MM to 4.10 gears?

Find a shop near you that works on Mustangs. They have the same rear end as we do. I had mine done for about $250.00 in labor.

Which brand of gears is touchy... it is like which is better: Charcoal or Gas; Blondes or Redheads....etc ;)
I would stick to a well know, reputable maker (Ford, Motive, Richmond).
With that being said, I installed Ford Racing.

Mine is a daily driver, in winter and snow storms, on ice and in rain, to horse riding lessons in the mud, accross vast expanses of highway, up Whiteface Mountain, down Whiteface Mountain, over the river, through the woods.
I drive mostly highway. I can tell you, my Marauder just loves 2,500 RPM. That's what you turn with 4.10 at 75 MPH on OEM tires.
Mind you, I run snows for winter driving.
