View Full Version : Wrong Ford Replacement HL Assemblies?

The original MM HL assembies are no longer available from Ford. The replacement HL assembly is confusing and does not fit. The original part # is 3W3X-13006-A/B. My HL has very bad condensation in it. The replacement assembly is a 3W3Z13008DA, but it has the original part number on it?.

The replacement HL has an extended bulb housing that prevents it from seating the last 1/2" into the HL opening. In additonal, the bulb housing does not have a twist cap on it as the original has or a provision for one. It apparently has some type of rubber boot that goes over it. The sides are smooth with no ears for a twist cap. The bulb housing cover does not come with the new HL assembly. Very confusing. Does anyone have any similar experience with the Ford replacement HL assemblies. The made in China ones seem to fit OK as I bought one last year.

You can fix the condensation issue yourself. Buy some 3M black silicon from Home Depot. Clean the joint between the lens and reflector with a toothbrush and some cleaner like Fantastic and dry it. Then apply the silicon over the top of the existing silicon but do a better job than the factory did (don't be cheap). Once the silicon drys put the head light in the oven . I put a towel down in a cookie sheet and put the headlight face down on the towel. Then I put the oven on 100 degrees ( the lowest setting) and let it bake for about an hour to get it good and dry. Never had a problem after that.

To answer your question, yes I've bought a replacement from
Ford and they have changed the design - eliminating the rear
cap/seal etc. But I didn't have any fitment problems.

Bad Merc - How much was the HL asembly at AAP? BigCars4Ever - How do you get the condensation/water out of the HL assembly. TheDonk - Is the new bulb housing just left open with the bulb holder exposed or is there some type of cover for it. Can you provide any information on how you got the HL assemby to fit in the car. I cannot get mine to go the last 1/2? Thanks fellows,Glenn

Yes the bulb connector is open to the weather. The bulb itself still
seals the housing.
As for drying I would just open it to the air, set it in the sun, let it bake dry.
You didn't say which side you're having a problem with, my experience is
only the passenger side. So far - fingers crossed.

I've replaced BOTH headlights on my '03 MM. When the condensation got into the lens, it etched and pitted the plastic on the inside. No amount of polishing fixed it.

I did note that Ford's instructions lists more parts than you need to replace the original headlight with the new design. They wanted to sell me a bulb extended and a wiring loom extender in addition to the rubber cap and headlight assembly. I didn't need them but the Ford guy was insistent, so I extracted a promise to let me return these custom ordered electrical parts if they were not necessary. Well, guess what they got back.

You just need the headlight assembly and the rubber boot. The other stuff is extraneous. I got the whole assembly from fordpartsdirect.com (which is cheaper than the Dealer - sorry!!) for $110.00. The 'version 2' headlight is MUCH better than the original, IMHO.

If you need more info, PM me and I'll get you the part numbers when I get home.

Describe the boot and how it goes over the bulb housing?

I got the ones from www.rockauto.com (http://www.rockauto.com) (it was on another thread that I just bumped).
They look great, and have all the parts. No need to worry about the dust cap or anything.
Install will be this weekend.

be good!

The ones that were on my car stock don't have the plastic twist cap on the back and just have the rubber cover thing. Next time I have them out I'll grab the part number off them, I know they had a Ford part number sticker on them. The car to my knowledge and car fax has never been in an accident so I don't know if they were replaced for the heck of it?

I had condensation really bad in my left HL and I took it out, cleaned the joint real well, took some clear "welders glue" all around the joint, then removed my HID bulb and shook the water out and then used a heat gun on low (hair dryer will work also) and blew the air into the HL until all of the water was gone.

I had a real problem with mine and I moved my HID wires from the stock location on the HL at the bottom to making a cross design cut in the back of the rubber piece and have not had any more water in my HL at all.
