I'm in training with my local volunteer fire department and I will be released soon have lights and siren privlages. I've been out of the fire service for 4 years and alot has changed. LED's were new and expensive back then and strobes were all the rage. I'm trying to decide what I will purchase and sites like elightbars are not helpful since most guys there don't like knockoff equipment. I'd like to see what you guys have in your MM's and what works and doesn't. I know I want a remote siren and switch box combo to save room and keep from drilling holes. I need to have 360 degree coverage per S.O.P. for non-lightbar cars. Thanks in advance guys.

I'm thinking of making my own version of a Whelen Inner Edge with some LIN3 and TIR3 LED's. I also need to figure out what I'm going to do for side warning.

Click on this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SNYgD8W-oU. This video as a snapshot picture about 3:53 in the video that might give you a good idea. It only shows the front ( LED's in window and grill and strobes in corner markers) but just after that it shows part of the rears working. I know they have strobes in the tail lights and reverse lights. The rear window has red and blue LED's on each side of the 3rd brake light and 8 head Light bar in the rear deck with amber in the middle and a red and blue on the outside of the amber. I have LED's from a company called copstick. www.copstick.com (http://www.copstick.com) They are very easy to mount and very bright. Hope this helps.

correct, it is tricking you....
the flash it wide and bright so it picks it up as if they are coming from the fogs.... just the corners. and the rears are not currently hooked up

You know, I respect you firefighters. I myself am scared of running into a building thats on fire. I'll get shot at all day long before I mess with fire. I just hate those damn volunteer firemen with all the lights and junk on thier cars. I worked in a small town that only had a volunteer fire dept and those guys thought that having those lights thought they could drive like a$$ hats whenever they were responding to a fire or an emergency. I almost got broadsided by on when responding to a "house fire." Then the volunteer fireman had the nerve to jump on me because He said he didn't have to yeild to my squad car, with light and siren activated because he was responding to the same emergency. Also had a volunteer fireman try to run from me one night about 4am. When I finally got him stopped he was drunk and claimed he was responding to a fire. That didn't go over real well for him seeing as how we have a full time fire dept and no volunteers.
Basically I think I'm trying to say that just because you have the spiffy lights doesn't give you the right to drive like a jerk. That and I'm jealous because I want the red and blues on my MM.

Please do not label us all that way... I am an on-call firemen (I get paid instead of volunteer to respond from my house) and we have rules and guidelines that we have to follow when responding with our lights on. Guys such as myself obey these rules set by the fire department as to not get reprimanded by the chief. There are those guys that are total "yahoos" as I like to call them and use them crazily. I am fortunate enough to work on a department with a great bunch of guys that do not abuse this privilege. I only use mine in the evening because they are useless during the day. Are there times when I might have my foot down a little farther for a serious call.... yes. If your house was on fire, would you want me responding to the station doing the speed limit? No, you would be outside your house saying where the hell are these guys!?!?! Yes, department safety comes first I know. Not trying to start an argument here, but please do not associate me with the "yahoos". My lights are tasteful and I use them with extreme caution.

Good rebuttal.
Hacklemerc's point was well-taken, and I don't think he feels that ALL volunteer guys are idiots. We have some reserve and regular LEOs that get high on the horse, too, and I'd hate to be lumped in with them. (though Shora and a few others already do that on a regular basis.)
There are idiots and professionals within EVERY occupation...as I'm finding out with home renos!

I love that skit lol... I have much respect for police officers... They have to see just as much death and destruction as we do. People see them as just a nuisance pulling them over, but responding to fires and medicals, they have to deal with the families etc just as much as we do and it is tough sometimes.
The emergency lights are a sensitive subject for me because I don't abuse them and there are plenty of people that do and I hate what those yahoos do and it makes us look bad! I am not that guy!

I meant no offense. I understand the need for Volunteer firemen/policemen. I admire you guys because you guys don't get paid a bunch and you face all the same dangers that regular Firemen do, alot of times with less training as well. I know a lot of good volunteer guys, but as was said before there are also alot of "yahoos" out there. Heck we just fired a full time police officer for stuff he was getting into off duty and then flashing his badge to get him out of trouble. Last I saw of him he was working as a waiter.
Our department views the blue lights as "courtesy" lights. Meaning it does not give the operator the right to dirve like a full fledged emergency vehicle as I have seen before. (reference my post above.) They still must adhere to traffic laws and regulations.
Again No offense meant. By the way, I haven't laughed that hard in weeks. I love those skits.

I am sure that you meant no offense and non taken... personal vehicle lights are a "courtesy". Technically people don't have to get out of my way (usually don't anyways even in a fire truck!!!)... We are allowed to go a little over the speed limit, but must obey all signals etc.
I did not take offense to what you said, just don't look down on us good firemen because of the clowns that drive like weenies... I know just as many yahoo cops as I do firemen

Alrighty then... now that we have sucessfully hijacked this thread... back to where to buy good lights. Galls has a nice assortment of lights. Galls is just a nice site all together.
TJ, its amazing who makes it past the background checks isn't it?
Little side note.. I was enroute to a burglary in progress one night. Lights and siren because I was a ways out yet. As I came up to an intersection a car in front of me refused to yeild. I layed on the air horn, no response, finally I went around into oncoming traffic and as I pass I look over. A teenage girl on her cell phone, giving me the dirtiest look. Luckily enough for me and not for her, other responding units called out secure and that they had one in custody. I swung around and stopped my cell phoner. She said the reason she didn't yeild was becuase she was on the phone and her car is a manual, she can't shift and hold the phone at the same time and I should have just gone around her on the right. Yeah she got a ticket.:D
Another side note... St. Louis just had two fire trucks that were responding to the same fire collide in an intersection. One of the trucks flipped over and put all five firemen in the hospital. It was all caught on a redlight camera that was just installed. It looked like neither of the trucks slowed for the intersection and just blazed right through it.
Ouch. I would post the vid but I can't seem to find it now.

Well, we are going to be cleared for lights and to finally ride out on the trucks on Monday. I went ahead and ordered an Axixtech Stealth Visor SV60 in red with white takedowns to break up the red. I like this particular unit over the Whelen Inner Edge because the quality is the same, but the price is lower. If I had to clear traffic for miles at a time, the Whelen would be my choice. Being that I don't live too far from the Firehouse and I won't be out on Dixie Hwy too often, I feel the SV60 will work for me. I'm also planning some sort of grill lighting, and a pair of lights that straddle the Rear Center High Mount brake light.

Aftef installing multipul inner edge's front/rear units, I can say that I never had a problem with any Whelen product. That's not to say that the Axixtech Stealth Visor SV60 isn't a good unit.... but I never take shortcuts when it comes to safety with public safety vehicles. Just my .02, good luck with your lights in your application. Keep us posted with the final results.

We are a courtesy state, I have lights and siren to "ask" people to clear the way. Although most will, there will always be someone who won't move. If my life depended on moving traffic, being noticed while on a traffic stop, or clearing a major highway intersection, then Whelen would have gotten the nod. I think Axixtech makes fine products, and I have yet to see someone not happy with a Stealth Visor. I did alot of research, and couldn't find the $200-300 advantage in the Whelen over the SV.

When I worked as a CNC Machinist, we used to make the molds for Whelen plow lights...... I HATED those molds because they had to be polished to highly..... Qualtiy of Whelen products is right up there.

I have a question for those with wig wags. I tried to tie my fog lights into the wig wags and the fuse on my wig wag unit blew. I tested the fog light with a test light to make sure I tapped into the correct wire, but when I turned it on the fuse blew.
I've decided on the Whelen HHS2100 siren / switch box combo. I'm waiting on taxes to get here so I can order it, and I'm using an old Galls Street Thunder siren for now.
My stealth visor should be here this week or next and I'll take some pics of the install.

I put the gall wig wag module on my car but could not tie into the fog lights. But if you cut your parking lights and fog lights on, when the wig wags are cut on the fog lights will flash as well. But they flash together intstead of wig waging like the headlights. There might be a way but I did not want to cut too many wires to make them work.

When you call your insurance company and tell them you use your POV as an emergency response vehicle, with lights and all, they don't have a problem with that? Red and white lights belong on fire trucks and ambulances. Just my 2 cents.

The easiest way to describe it is.... they need to be wired independently, and will require a flasher able to handle high amperage loads. Worst case, 2 independent flashers to make all flash together. Instead of doing the flasher thing, have you ever considered LED lights instead? Less amperage draw, more flash patterns, you can do colors instead of white etc..

My insurance agent told me off the record not to tell him if I installed anything. I will be covered if anything is stolen, but if an accident occurs it will automatically my fault.
