View Full Version : Who has a CAI and stock exhaust -- intake noise/whistle? How bad

Who here has a cold air intake and STOCK exhaust. I am only interested in installing a CAI on this car if it does not make noise inside the cabin. I know it's very application-specific how loud un-resonated cold air intakes are on any given car, on some it's barely louder than stock, and on others they drone horribly. Also a lot of CAI's I've heard allow you to hear the whistle that any throttle body will produce at a certain throttle position. I don't want to hear the throttle blade whistle and I don't want to hear a loud bassy intake drone cruising. How loud is your CAI (only if your exhaust is stock!) and what brand is it. Also how old are you/ can you hear. Relevant questions! My neighbor has a Chevy Avalanche w/ the 5.3 and a cold air intake and he can't hear the intake noise at all (nearly deaf though!). I can barely tolerate being a passenger in his truck because even during normal cruising, the intake bellows such a god awful loud drone that it hurts my ears. Plus the whistle of the throttle body is audible even w/ the windows up. I wouldn't mind the extra few hp of an aftermarket intake but only if it's not going to cause me a headache.
Thanks
Steve

There is no noticable difference in normal driving, but with the K&N CAI kit it sounds like a superchager at wide open throttle! pretty cool if you ask me but for normal driving and acceleration there is no noise difference around town or on the highway.

I don't hear my JLT with the doors closed and windows up. If their open then I can def. hear it when I get on it. One of my pulleys that I replaced has made a whining sound since the day I got it and it sounds like a Vortech s/c lol. First question I always it "is that a s/c I hear?" lol.

Yeah my jlt is loud after 2200 RPM up until it shifts and from then on louder and louder it gets does sound like a S/C

That is good to know. Ctr does your car have a stock exhaust? If so I want to ride in your car before I buy the intake, that will tell me everything I need to know as to whether I can live with it.

I have a K&N cai stock exhaust and the car is not loud at all. It is just a little louder then stock only when you get on it. At normal rpms you will not notice the change.

Thats why JLT is Better than K&N. Fatter tubing= Better Performance

I have a K&N CAI and you only hear it at about half throttle, its hard to describe the sound but I definately would not say its a whistling sound

I actually think my whistling sound comes from the belt i have?

And i hear my intake from lower RMP's until it shifts gears and it happens in every gear!

I have stock exhaust and a JLT. There is no difference in sound until about 3k RPM when it starts to growl. Sounds EXCELLENT. Highway and normal in-town driving are no different in noise or volume. GET THE JLT!!!

I have a JLT with stock exhaust. With the windows down & radio off, I can hear the intake sucking in air under heavy acceleration. I wouldn't say it's LOUD, but it is noticable. With the windows up, the sound level is pretty much the same as without the JLT... Given the choice, I would buy it again

Those are some pretty impressive HP gain claims from JLT's dyno runs. What worries me a little is how much the AFR seems to go way over rich across the board with the JLT intake vs stock. I wonder if that was a result of bolting an intake on a car without giving it time for the computer to re learn fuel trim? Is everyone's gas mileage about the same before/after the intake?
I don't ever roll the windows down on the MM unless I really feel like it for some reason, or I'm at a toll booth, so that sounds like it will help.

I also have the JLT with a stock exhaust and it to is quiet until 3000 rpm and then i hear the sweet sound of air flowing under the hood. Makes the pasengers hold on tight.

but it was great the other day, I was on my way home from Grandmas in the marauder and had my mom in the car, long story short there were too many slow cars and a smart area to pass so i nailed it and ran her up to about 95-100-
2 things were great at this moment,
1) the guy in the mustangs eyes bugged out of his head and his jaw dropped to the floor mat as i rocket around 5 cars,:awe:
2) (and my favorite) my mom looks at me and says "when did you finally get a supercharger?"

I do actually, you can hear it on the outside of the car but the inside its not to noticeable at all.
with just the JLT and nothing else, you can notice the car pulls harder for sure
PS: My MPG's have remained the same. But word to the wise, keep your PCM unhooked for 30min, then plug it in and drive the car. get on it a few times also.

Sounded like a 4 barrel without the air cleaner!!:D

Why unhook the PCM? The CAI has nothing to do with the computer other than the MAF, but i also agree that the car feels much stronger with a CAI (I am using the K&N) and I also agree with the big 4bbl open air cleaner statement.

For the car to readjust the A/F. The airbox obviously flows less than the JLT, so when you add the JLT, your putting in more air than the PCM knows

Man...what fun is a RWD V8 muscle car if ya can't hear it? The intake noise is better than caffiene in the monring...

Nope no stock exhaust hear, 2nd set of cats deleted, Flowmaster super 40's and res delete tips.
Honestly even with my exhaust setup up unless I have the windows down and next to an object on the road and give it gas I rarely ever hear mine. Now if I'm sitting still and rev it yeah it makes noise but our 4.6L air pump is enjoying more air its getting now.

I have a custom made CAI w/stock exhaust. The only diff I hear is it makes the exhasut louder. Marauderboi saw me the other day and asked when I had upgraded the exhasut. It will howl at wide open throttle but you can expect that from any CAI. That is what happens when you add airflow.
You can see it here: http://www.mercurymarauder.net/showcase/files/7/2/6/2/P1010192a.JPG
I also have 4.10 gears and a Scott Beer tune so I knwo it is a little louder also because of the increased RPMs due to the gears.

This is not a muscle car as far as I am concerned. Different people like to do different things with a particular car. I want to keep mine quiet. I have a redneck 2nd gen Camaro to make noise with if and when the mood strikes.

+1
I've got PHP installed on mine with stock exhaust, and there's a noticable under-hood moan when I nail the gas to WOT. However, at cruising speed, under light throttle load you can't hear it.

The JLT intake is a huge difference in sound over the stock setup.

An intake no matter which brand u go with will make you car "Louder" inside the car the outside ppl dont hear it until u pass them. JLT just happens to be louder than K&N!
ctrlraven

Even if you put in a K&N drop-in filter it will be louder and even more so if you remove the little J thing on the intake tube and plug the hole up.

Like I said I have ridden in V8 vehicles w/ cold air intakes that droned so bad, just due to the acoustics that resulted with that particular plumbing setup combined with the engine, that it was intrusive to conversation and to listening to the stereo. I got a pretty good idea from this post of what to expect, and it sounds like it shouldn't drone too badly on this car. The big resonator chamber(s) on stock intakes aren't in and of themselves a restriction, moreso the size of stock plumbing and the filter media. The resonators get ommitted in the aftermarket intakes because it's cleaner looking without them, cheaper to manufacture, and cheaper to produce because you don't have to pay engineers to figure out how to tune resonator(s) with a new intake duct. I would be crazy enough to build a resonated aftermarket intake because I know it would make as much power and be quieter, which in my "old age" at 25 is a pursuit I am after now more than just making noise on a car that is not fast enough to justify noise for noise's sake.

yes it wouls be a fact due to the removel of said air muffler that disrupts the airflow and as a result makes it quite.. as i am to believe it
