Has anyone experienced an oil leak from where the filter stand attaches to the block? I have a 2004 and it seems to young to be experiencing incontinence problems. This seemed to have started after a recent service (by a garage). Could the gasket be cracked? It looks like it will be a nightmare to replace so I thought i'd quiz the pros before I swing a wrench.

Check to see if the filter base has come loose from the block.
Hammer head mechanics can "expedite" this condition when removing the old filter.
They mighr also have left the old filter gasket on the base and installed the new filter over it.
Clean the area and try to see the exact location of the leak - either of the above will require filter removal for repair.

The old gasket from the oil filter sometimes sticks to the surface of the engine. Double gaskets make it leak. :cool4:

Those gaskets have leaked on a few MM's over the years.
Try tightening it first.

The Allen-head plug in the base of the filter housing had leaked in the past for me. Snugged it up and all was good.

In older Mark VIII's the adapter would develop a crack from vibration and had to be replaced....don't ask how I know??!!:mad2:

Try tightening it first as others have said!!:D

Good Luck!!

Thanks for the replies, I tried tightening the filter adapter and it helped a little but I am going to go ahead and replace the gasket.

I had to tighten mine up also because of a little seepage. I will be relocating the filter for easier access. I plan on using this from Canton:

It is designed to replace that whole piece and provide an easy way to connect a remote filter system.
I will have to buy the filter mount, hoses, and fittings separately but I think it is better than most of the spin on kits.
Might be my Christmas gift from the wife. I'll take photos as when I do the work.

Had this happen on the Crown Vic because a guy decided to use an oil filter wrench to tighten the oil filter.

the new gasket solved the problem. The old one had signs of over tightening. Thanks

I have just found the same leak it appears to be coming from the gasket between the engine block and the filter stand. Has anyone done this fix yet? Is it very involved? I cant believe this could happen at 80,000 miles.
