There is a Federal Gov't emissions warranty on cats for 8 years or 80,000 miles whichever comes first.

I agree: MagnaFlow (a.k.a., Car Sound) makes a good variety of catalytic converters that are competitively priced.

I would be extremely surprised if stock cats "went". The stock cats will be of higher quality than the "free flow" aftermarket cats, as far as converting and longevity go. You can get the Carsound/Magnaflow/Walker cats so cheap because I'm sure the materials are not as good as stock. They may "flow more" because they make the honeycomb shorter = less restriction, but also less surface area exposed to the exhaust to convert toxins. I would look into the O2s like the guys said. Unless you were running race gas through your cats, or unless you have like 150k++++ miles on the car they should be fine.

My car's stock cats were replaced at ~20k under warranty because the ceramic carrier broke down. The car was bone stock. With the metallic substrates, there's actually more catalyst as there's more surface area. The rigidity and heat transfer properties of the metallic cores also allows them to resist break down better than ceramics. And, these can be had for much cheaper than the ~$900 per side list price of the stock cats. It is the lead in certain race fuels that leads to catalyst poisoning (i.e., failure).
