Any pointers on how to clean my engine bay with out getting a crap load of water where it doesn't belong?

On a cold engine:

I soaked my engine bay with Simple Green Max.

Let it sit for 5 minutes.

Spreay off with waterhose.

Spray off w/ airhose.

Clean up the waterspots that survived w/ a microfiver towel.

NEVER had an issue w/ the MM, or any other vehicle I have owned.

Use any of the available engine cleaners that are available (I like the cirus scented one). Follow the directions on the can. Use a low pressure spray to remove. I use compressed air to remve any remaining water and to dry everything. I followup use CD2 engine detailer, I can only find this at Autozone, $5.99 / can. Again follow the instructions. The key is to keep it clean. I rinse the engine compartment down every other wash. This is mine:

I use the greased lightning orange blast from walmart, works great, the citrus oils cut the grease well and it smell good after you are done. I give the engine a little mist of water, spray with the orange blast and let it sit while i clean the wheels. if you are real dirty use a soft wheel brush then rinse lightly. This is also great on the wheels and tires

I stand by simple green 100% along with several other members and you should probably use an item that was designed to be used on your engine and not on your kitchen sink.

It might not have that orange smell, but do you really need orange peels in your alternator anyway? Also, you don't have to worry 'bout letting the excess go down the drain or on the grass as its environmentally safe.

+1 on the first 3 items.

I then spray the entire engine compartment with Stoner's "More Shine Less Time."

The product is a tire detailer, but it works great on engine bays as well; it displaces any remaining water and really gives the engine compartment a great look. Spray a little for a semi-gloss look, more for a glossy finish.

It's somewhat hard to find. I buy mine at the local Pep Boys, but you can also order it on line:

Part of washing the engine is luck! You'll never know if you have a "less than perfect" electrical connection until you spray water all over the engine (even with low pressure)...ask me how I know, lol.

after you get it clean, its easy to keep it clean.

I use meguiers interior cleaner and a microfiber to keep it that way.

For a dirty engine bay I use Gunk Foamy Engine Brite following their directions. I have a couple of different brushes to get into the crevices if needed for heavy grunge. Following the rinse I cover the belt then use Turtle Wax F21 tire treatment and let it sit/dry. I then use a microfiber to get any excess F21 and sort of wipe everything down to make it perfect.

As others have said, once it's clean it's pretty easy to maintain with just a frequent wipe down with Meguiars and a micro to knock out the dust and any waterspots.
