From what I've heard.......

You'll need a BFH to get the crossmember out.

not a bad job if you got a lift. Make sure you index your new t/c to the fly wheel. I find that a crows foot helps with the cooler lines. Usually takes me about a hour to do. make sure you don't drop the u joints don't ask I just know that it is a pain to find all the little bearing pieces.

I had the trans in and out of an 02 6 times in three days. The most important thing is to make sure the pump is engaged into the TC. If it is not you will burn up your pump and ruin your trans (ask me how i know). Make sure you have a 3 foot socket extension too to get the top bolts. Use a universal with a little tape around it. It makes the universal stiff to help get the top bell housing bolts in.

how do i make sure the pump is enguaged?

The engagement between the TC and front pump is absolutely critical!
If it's not proper, you WILL smoke those pump gears in 2 seconds the moment you start the engine!

When you put the TC onto the trans, odds are you will not have the TC lined up perfect with the pump gears (unless you are very lucky). You will need to rotate the TC while taking its weight of the input shaft and try to push it in further into the trans. When the TC and the gears are lined up, the TC will go in about an addtional 3/4 inch.

As a final test, when you have the trans bolted to the engine and the TC does not rotate freely by hand, the TC is not properly engaged with the pump gears.

Oh yeah, the crossmember is a real bee-otch!

Grind down the crossmember (where the bolting points are) before reinstalling.
Makes the job a little easier.

KillJoy's Transmission Removal Guide. This guide assumes stock exhaust.

1. Drain Trans Fluid.

2. Remove Drive Shaft.

3. Remove the Cat Pipe from both sides.

4. Remove the Starter.

5. Disconnect the Cooler Lines.

6. Remove the Bolts that hold the Trans to the Engine.

7. Remove the Crossmember (A big prybar will be needed if it has never been done. Also, soaking the mating areas in PB Blaster will aid a small amount.)

8. Get a friend to help yank the Transmission off (Use a jack to help support the weight of the Transmission).

Reinstall is about the same. Make sure you fully seat the TC. I found that standing the Transmission up on the Tailshaft aided this.

If you are installing a PI converter it may need some "persuasion" with a rubber mallet.

Does anybody have a diagram of where the bolts are located that hold the trans to the engine I've got 5 removed 2 on the bottom left and 2 on the bottom right and one on the top left which was hard to get to.

FordNut
08-03-2009, 07:25 PM
2 on the top are pretty much level with each other.
Pull the wiper motor/cowl assembly so you can get to the top bolts.
Did one of the left ones have a nut holding the bracket for the O2 sensor connector?

Steve does it in about 30 minutes, if the car has LTH 45, I can not imagine doing it on the floor with Jack stands.

Does the wiper assembley have to come off to get to the drivers side top bolt? I got to the passenger side top bolt with the assembley on.

No. I did mine all from the floor w/ Jackstands. It took time, but they finally came out.

The last time I did the Trans, it was about 1.5 Hrs R&R.

Yes, because of my schedule, Darrin did not have time to do it himself. He usually does.... even custom colors.

Plus the universal at the end that keeps flopping around so you can't get the socket to stay on the bolt!

Yeah... when he gets older, Brian, he'll start despising the things that just flop around and won't stay where you try to put them.....
