I had a new fuel filter put in last week.
The fellow that did it took a 93 octane shower.
He was trying to be careful to release the pressure from the connector, but it sprayed all in his face and front.
The check engine lamp came on as usual, this time I rode it out, letting nature take its course.
After a week and 255 miles, just while pulling in to refuel, the check engine lamp reset itself (turned Off).

Guess he didn't think about pull the the fuel pump fuse, start the car and let it run until it dies. I had maybe 1/4 of a cup end up coming out. As far as the CEL, put the fuse back in and cycled the key 5 times, light came on for 5 secs and then went off.

I had none of these issues at all when I did mine. I relieved the pressure at the fuel rail. Mind you, my car was cool as I let is sit all day. I would imagine on a recently run vehicle the pressure would be higher.

Did the job, turned the key to on with out starting three times. Shut key off and started as usual. No spraying, no CEL. All good.

I think you need to recharge the system before starting. I could tell on the third prime all was good, as it sounded like it always does. You can hear the pump run when the filter was empty.

Maybe I was just lucky?

No problems here either. I turned the key off, waited about 10 minutes, changed filter (being careful with those cheap clips) with only a cup of fuel into the drain pan and very little pressure. Turned key on (no engine start) and waited a second or so for pump noise to stop, then fired 'er up. No check engine light.
