I have a 98 Mitsubishi Montero Sport with a 3.0 that is over 10 years old and 120k miles on it. She's starting to do some smoking when accelerating from stops, the longer it idles the bigger the poof cloud. I was wondering if anyone has used and had any success with the "Restore" type additives or "high mileage formula" oils? Its the spare vehicle/hauler of junk so its not something I'm planning on sinking any money into.

Sounds like valve guide seals....fairly easy to fix if you have the tools!!

I think Restore is an oil additive that is supposed to increase compression??

You may get some improvement with a liquid seal conditioner but at 10 years I doubt it!!:shake:

My $.02 worth!!:D

+ one more for what they said ^^^ .

Those "miracle-in-a-can" additives are nothing more than concentrated viscosity index improvers that just make the oil thicker. Don't waste your money on the so-called "high mileage" oils, either. Just use an oil that's one grade thicker than usual...it'll do the same thing. The only real fix is to replace the valve seals, though...

You do the work and will be amazed at the results.
Those parts are probably that much money.
I got a 60K due on the 1992 SHO w /155K, it runs decent but has a surge at cold idle.
If it does stall before warmed up, it is difficult to restart, often requiring extended crank time while holding the go pedal down to the floor..
No smoke anytime though and got a 15.88 at the dragstrip.
If it's just dirty, I've had some sucess with the dealer offered additives.
