aight yall, the 255/55/18's. Ive seen em once, my dumbass didnt look twice. Those who have these and those who have taken a good look at em'. As far a size how are they compared to the BFG's? thats all im really concerned about. Ive heard enough good thinks about how they perform, im just concerned about the size. 255/55/18, thats a damn truck tire. i know i could just look at all the conversion tables and see mathmatically what the size diffrence is, but im really only concerned with how they look.

Plan'n on orderng these wed. Whatchall think?

I have had them on my car for almost 2 years and I love them. They even look great.

IMO, I think you'll find very little difference in height between brands, and about an inch or so between the OEM BFG's and a 255/55/18. If you want to check out tire pics, try out the following links:

http://www.discounttire.com (http://www.discounttire.com/)

http://www.eastcoasttire.com/shop/index.htm

http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp

You can enter the brand, size, etc, and get a visual of the tire; usually from a couple of angles. Key thing you want to look for is proper speed rating, V or Z, less than that and you're asking for trouble. Nitto, Hankook, Falken, General, Goodyear all make good replacements for the OEMs.

I got my Marauder about 30K miles ago with the Nitto's already on it and they look great, handle great and seem to wear pretty damn well too...go for it!

I'm glad this thread is around because I need new rear tires and didn't find out until recently that our factory ones are on back order again.

im just concerned about the size. 255/55/18, thats a damn truck tire.
The difference is negligible. It's only about .4 inches (loaded) taller and less than .4 inches wider.

I got the Dunlop SP 5000's, I wasn't sure about the light truck tire in the snow.

Well from a fellow Texan....they look fabulous on the car....I have had no issues with them so far and have been in the rain with them with no issues....I have had people say the make the Marauder look meaner and more aggressive!!

Great tire! I have no handling issues. My speedo is spot on, radar checked. Buy them, you won't regret it.

Does anyone know if these tires are ok in snow? They looks pretty bad for the snow. I just might need a set soon and my truck won't be back for a week or so. Thoughts? Experiences?

Out of all things, why do our car tires have to be sooo difficult! I'm dreading the day I have to get em'. I'd like to keep what came from the factory, at least till I widen the rears.

I am using the

Nitto 404

Lots of soft rubber, and a great ride height

285/50/18 its flippin perfect and will fit on an 8 inch rim
I have them on my widened rims
I have driven on them for over a year, done a few burnouts, and they are still in very good shape, GREAT traction.

Nitto alludes to it being capable of snow handling (from nittotire.com's 420s technology section: "Siping was designed to provide a biting edge for all season traction"), but I would guess that they're not a very capable all season tire, if at all.

I believe you are asking for a wrecked MM using 420s in the snow.

Pat

I too was concerned about how they would look on my MM. I visited the local dealer, looked at the tire and thought it a little too "fat" for my taste.

Later my friend, James79stang, stopped by and he had Nitto 420's and the car looked like it came from the factory with them. Next time I'll get the Nitto's.

I also have the Nitto 420's and like them. When I took the wheels into the shop to have them mounted (I won't let mechs loose with an air wrench around my MM), a guy with a '57 Chevy came over and said "Great looking tires, and where did you get the wheels". He had a hard time believing they were stock.

And then, of course, they insisted I bring the car back so they could see the whole package!

I agree with Pat. The Nitto 420's look like they came with the car.

This thread is like the ultimate in deja-vu....

We need a Nitto 420 sticky faq as this thread nearly mirrors the last one a week ago that mirrored the last one several weeks ago that mirrored the one months ago that mirrored the one from last year. :baaa: Same questions, same replies.....It's like friggin ground hog day with tires.

The really weird part other than the same people making the same confirmation is Dom asking the SAME question as to their winter worthy-ness as was asked last week.

Damnit new people...SEARCH!!!!!

Ok...I feel better now and will continue to reply to Nitto 420 threads weekly.:P

fyi:

Eight exact title hits for 420s NITTO http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/search.php?searchid=2091702

Seventy One hits where the 420s is spoken of in threads, of which nearly 50% are specific. http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/search.php?searchid=2091714

Uhh-hem....

Yes, the 420's is nearly exactly the same as OEM but a little wider, and a tad taller, but not enough to make any difference in run-out and won't effect the speedo nor gear ratio in any way.

Snow....noooo...snow is not compatible with this tire. It is too firm, and the tread pattern is not condusive of snow grip.

Oh yeah...they are actually pretty decent at the track once thoroughly warmed up.

I am going to sleep now....hopefully I will be able to answer this question again tomorrow.:P

So ummm... you "do" recommend Nittos for winter and snowy driving?? :D oh yeah, with these mess with my speedo or traction control and ABS? oh one more thing... whats the difference between these and OEM? Are they wider and taller or thinner and shorter? Do they taste like bananas or strawberries? I love strawberries. I hope these are good on the track as well.. what kind of tire smoke do they make when doing burnouts? Is it the thick gray smoke or the ligher see thru smoke? When doing burnouts do these leave the little rubber dingle berries on the fenders like all the rest of the tires I've had?

Can you feel the sarcasm...

Anybody have a problem with Nitto 420 front and 555 on the rear. Thought I saw where some guys were running this combo. The tread pattern is different.
I think the size is 235-50/18 and 255-55/18
Ended up getting stuck with BFG fronts and rears not being available. So I went and bought the Nitto's. Now I dont know after seeing them

Tire Rack said a big maybe on the BFG rears. Wont know until 12/12

Anybody ran Goodyear RS/A's? I'm running those right now and they are worthless in the snow. or rain. I was looking into some Nitto's, but dont know how they would compare...

Damn the Marauder's odd tire size; need rears, can't wait for the OEMs to come back available since the ones on the car are already borderline, and I'm having a hell of a time finding anything useful in 255/55. Despite the fact that we don't get much winter weather here in central NC, I want an all-season tire since the MM is my only car, so that rules out the 420S and some of the other popular choices. Want to keep it under $200/tire so that rules out the Michelins and Goodyears. I'm currently considering the General Grabber UHP since I know Cheesehead and a couple others are using them and they're quite reasonable.

If that doesn't work out, does anyone know much about the Kumho Ecsta STX? Comes in 255/55, V-rated (I know I'd be replacing Z with V, but some of the other popular choices are also V-rated), I had good luck with the Ecsta ASX on my old Mark VIII. Anyone running those, or know any positives/negatives?

PM 03mmmonroe and fastblackmerc, they're running Falken and (I think) Hankooks and could give you some good info on performance of those brands.

FWIW, I haven't had the Generals in snow yet, but they do a good job in the rain, and we've had a lot of that recently.

I just purchased the Kumhos in 255/55/18, considerably cheaper than the 420's.... actually alot, like $75 a piece. They dont look even half as cool as the Nittos, and the speed rating...but whatever its winter, im cold, the car is cold... Summer will bring a performance tire. Ill get some pics up of the kumhos. Not a bad looking tire.

Where the devil are you getting them for $75 each?? Lowest I could find was Tire Rack @ 102 (before $40 shipping charge)...though I'm trying to get this done tomorrow or Saturday morning as I'm traveling Saturday afternoon and I was a dumbass who didn't plan in time, hence I'm having to pay $140 per from a local tire shop. About the same price I would have paid for the Nittos (or the Generals/Hankooks had they been available).

i got the dunlop sp 5000's, i wasn't sure about the light truck tire in the snow.
I like the Dunlop's, as they have performed well in the snow and wear forever. Goodyear owns Dunlop, yet Dunlop produces their own tire. Purchased them from tire rack. Now for ice, you need studded tires or chains!
