View Full Version : My brake light keeps coming on

The brake light in the gage cluster keeps coming on. My brakes are not squeaking, nor are the rotors warped, but slowing down does take longer. I noticed this usually happens when the car is cold or the weather is cold and when it's cold, the problem lasts throughout the whole trip.
I have checked the brake fluid level and it's fine. I do not have much experience with brakes other than taking the rotors off, changing the pads and putting fluid in.
Any ideas?

Brake fluid?
Did you read it all?
The fluid level is fine, maybe something is messing with the flow of things???

maybe the sensor is bad

sensor +1, or if it just started when the weather got cold maybe some water in the lines setting something off. I would have the brake fluid changed even if it is something else. I am going to have mine done the next time it is in for an oil change.

What I meant was check to see if the lines are getting fluid...or something else...:(

Check the parking brake switch.....................

I will check that again, but why would it stop slower if the parking brake was engaged? Also, where is the sensor located?

Could it have something to do with your emergency brakes, I remember someone mentioning problems that could occur with possible corrosion and them getting stuck. I'll try to search it for you.

Hey Dom, I hope it is not this, but it might be. I had the red light come on in my Wife's Sable and I think the entire fiasco is documented here:

Hope that helps.
Start by checking the parking brake sensor, which lives above the parking bralke pedal.
Then clean ll the ABS sensors at each wheel.
Does your ABS work? If not, I would bet it is the brake control module....

Two things cut on the red light by itself, the e-brake switch and the fluid level switch. If the redlight comes on with the ABS light, then a possible ABS concern. If the red light comes on for anyother reason than those two, there is a short to ground on the switch side of the circuit. Both the fluid level and the e-brake switch splice together and both ground the light bulb directly. If you unplug one switch at a time while the light is on, you should find the problem.
Correction, the ignition switch grounds the same circuit when the key is in the start position to do a bulb check. So I guess, that could cause a problem. But highly unlikely.

I messed with the brake release and it was ok for a little while, but it's back at it when the car is cold especially when I brake hard. It almost works like the brake lights on the outside now. When I release the brakes the interior light goes off, when I use the brakes hardly or when the car is almost at a stop the light will come on.
I'm still kinda clueless because it does seem to take longer to stop, but it doesn't make noise or anything. Could it be the pads?

Have you checked to see if the float is sticking in the master cylinder? It happens sometimes.
If fluid looks like the one on the right then it's time to flush system:

Well it sure as heck isn't as clear as the middle bottle. How do I correctly flush the system just for future reference?

I suggest you take it to a reputable brake specialist.
