i have a 300A, long past warranty (96k). Passenger side axle seal just started leaking. its going to the dealer on monday (hinder LM up in bel air, md). I'm wondering whether there is any way ford wil pick up any of the tab since there is a TSB about this problem. I'm not sure how that works. has anyone ever gotten any money out of ford for TSB issues after the warranty expired???
thanks for your input

There is no way ford will pick up the tab especially with you having 96,000 miles. Mine isn't leaking yet but starting to howl. I will be doing my own axles very soon.

ever think of doing it yourself? not too hard really pull the diff cover gota pull the pin that keeps the axles in place thats held in by a bolt. pull the caliper and rotor then pusht he axle in and pull the c clip then pull the axle out and replace the seal.

sounds easy right :D

iT WOULD BE CALLED A AWA (AFTER warranty adjustment) THe ford rep can do something upto 75,XXX or 5-yrs after That,There is nothing the Dealer can do or a FORD REP. As IMPALASLAYER qoted above with right the tools it is a esy fix.

^^^what they said^^^

If you aren't comfortable with DIY, it's a very simple job for any independent shop that works on Mustangs or F150s. The dealer will kill you with labour charges.

If the vehicle is still under a FORD ESP would they fix the problem?

Do you have a howl from the rear? The TSB wasn't for an axle seal leak, it was for worn axles and bearings. You may just need a seal and not axles and bearings.

no howl, but i am hearing a wump, wump, wump sound. kind of a grinding noise...
do you guys think i should just have them replace the seal and not the whole axle? does anyone have pix of one that is badly scored? what kind of damage to the axle should i be looking for?

Very possible it is the axle. Mine also makes that kind of noise, Jack up the RR and move the tire up down and side to side. If it moves then bingo theres your issue.

I'll have to check into this and see if my friend can help me out and get my 4.10 gears installed while I get the bearings replaced lol.

That would be the way to do it, they are going to have it all opened up who wants to fit the rtv sealant a 2nd time!!!

Replacing an axle seal is definitly something you can do with simple hand tools. If the seal is leaking i would be suspect that the axleshaft is wiped out. You'll know when the axleshaft is removed, there will be a recess where the bearing rides on the journal. Replace the axleshaft if needed!

The wump sound is an indication the axle's bearing surface has suffered the "soft axle" syndrome. You will need the axle TSB.

I had the same thing, it was two bad axles, and the howl/wup/wup/wup was a pinion bearing in my case. I will try to get pics of the axles, i went back and grabbed them out of the dealers junk pile. I would have the dealer, garage, you, whoever does the work, replace all seals and all bearings, it is cheap insurance and i am always one to say do it all at once.

Just s note on my situation. Lately i've found my stopping distance has increases and the brakes require more presure. When I had the tries swapped for the summer my mechanic said the rear axle seals are leaking and its getting on to the rotars thus making for slippery brakes. Does this sound about right?

He is fixing them this weekend.

Thanks.

It could if bad enough. I found my leaking seals the same way, but it did not effect the brakes. Just made a mess of my steelies.

Here is a question. My mechanic mentioned that the speed sensor had to be reifed out. He said he was able to save it, but that it appears it may be common to have to replace it when doing axle seals.

Did anyone else have an issues taking the axle out?

I'll let you know when I do it this weekend. :(

The ABS sensors need to be removed also to push the axle in far enough to remove the c-clips.

^^^good point^^^, Zack bailed me out on that one! They only need to be moved an eigth inch or so, not removed.

RoyLPita: Do you have the TSB? (can you post it) I have an extended 3/36 on my powertrain and the Axles are covered. I have to pay $100 deductable. I want to replace them before they fail -- I don't hear any odd noises yet. I have 46,000 on my 03 which does have a MFG date prior to 1/1/2003

Any tips on getting this accomplished are much appreciated.

:thanks:

He said he has the axles not the TSB info. Use the search function. The TSB has been posted many times before.
