View Full Version : LT Headers to stock exhaust

Hello all,

I plan on installing SW longtube headers with 3" collectors to the stock exhaust. This will only be until I have the funds to finish the whole exhaust, and now I have some time to install the headers. I realize that I am defeating the purpose by restricting after the headers. With this in mind I figure I will need to reduce from 3" to 2 1/4" to mate back up to the first cat and band clamp things down (possibly need O2 extenders). I figure there will be some fab work involved. Do you folks foresee any problems in piping this job? Any suggestions? Much appreciated.

PERSONALLY..... I would install Cut-Outs after those Headers, then mate that to the stock front cats. Have that then mate to the stock, unmolested H-Pipe. And then leave everything else alone!

You will get a wee bit of sound / tone from the LT's through the stock exhaust. Then, when you are feeling froggy, open the cutouts!

After running the above setup, I will NEVER modify the full exhaust again. Loud and obnoxious when wanted, yet quiet enough to come home REALLY late and not get in trouble ;)

When you use the cut out; would one throw a code at the 1st cat?
My goal in the end is forced induction. I'm piecing things together as time and money permit, so eventually I'm thinking 3" system. Right now I just want the headers in. :burnout:

The Tune I had turned off the Rear O2's.

A code was NEVER thrown while running cutouts (even if the car was shut off, and turned on w/ them open).

On my car, w/ the Cutouts open, I dropped .3 at the track!

Honestly wait till you have the money to do the whole exhaust (if that's what you want) and get everything done at once.

Don't make extra work for yourself when you don't have to.

KillJoy, how are you going to mate a LT header to our stock FRONT cat when it's connected right off the stock manifold? lol

A whole lot easier to install new high flow cats.

I said LT's to Cutouts. After the Cutouts, a step down to adapt to the size of the Stock Front Cat. Then, connect to the stock H-Pipe w/ the original flanges.

Also, the Cat Pipes on the MM are a Mid Pipe. They bolt to the Manifoldon one end, then to the H-Pipe on the other. They are removable w/ 4 Bolts per side.

I'd like to wait until I have the funds to complete the system, but I have had these headers for almost two years. I'm stock except for a tune; I just need a little something right now.

So I'm hearing conflicting views. Will the open headers lose power or not?

It will releave back pressure.

Boost - No.

N/A - Probably.

Why 3in. pipe

Why 3in. pipe

I have pipe dreams of an eventual supercharger on a big bore stroker set up. So I figured 3" to get the most out of it.......eventually.

N/A DEFINITELY

I ran a non-muffler side pipe exhaust hit the track with just K&N drop-in and tune and did a 14.8x with a high trap speed. 3 weeks later I put the rear section exhaust back on and did a 14.44 at a slower trap speed.

If your going to go big exhaust being N/A with just a tune your going to want some more mods to help support it. Intake, high stall converter, 4.10 gears and get a dyno tune.

I got them on a group buy here almost 2 years ago.
