it's been done, it was a combo of chambers and perforated tube that snaked through the can (like the dynomax super turbo + chambers but terrible) and no glass weave or any other packing inside... cfm... 0???? I kid I kid I'd bet money on sub 200s though
looked at the thread again, it's actually worse than I described, thread is on MCM

Welcome back, Rich. Glad your self-imposed vacation was short.
Here's a reference thread on the topic >>>> http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=43218&highlight=inside+muffler. I seem to recall pics that were posted but cannot find that original thread.

Wow I even started the linked thread. I feel important. Thread doesn't tell you anything though. Feeling of importance, ended.
I'm sure the MM stock mufflers have a 2" pass tube, which will totally kill flow. The stock mid pipe is 2" and the outlet is 2.25" and stock mufflers almost always have smaller pass tubes than the pipe they are passing.
I would be interested just for the hell of it in flow #s too. I LOVE the sound of the stock MM. It is the perfect volume level for me. I really would not want this car to be one iota louder.

Hope this isn't considered a thread jack.
I like the factory sound of my MM.
Just wondering if I switched to a 04 Cobra mustang muffler for improved flow if the sound is much different.
I think i've heard that the cobra muffler is 2 1/2" in and 21/2" out.
Is that correct?
And would it be an improvment?
(inquiring minds and all that).:)

I would be interested too! I actually have a pair of (stainless) OEM late 90s mustang Cobra mufflers that are 2.25" in/out at least.
You need to see what the pass tube size is on those cobra mufflers. Stock mufflers usually step down at least one size in dia, for the pass tubes, so a 2.5" may only have 2.25" pass tubes. But that is probably still an improvement over our stockers.
You would want to upsize the mid pipe to at least 2.25" mandrel bent to gain any flow advantage. A 2" exh pipe is not going to push more than 200's in cfm just due to its size.

Cobra Muffs are 2 1/4 My wife's car has factory ones with an offroad X. It sounds awesome, but i'm sure an aftermarket catback would pick up a good bit of power.

I have dynomax super turbos (3" tube) and they are pretty quiet, dang near silent on the freeway. Only time it gets loud is when I really get on it, but you have to consider I have a big bore stroker, LTs, big collectors, no cats, and 3" pipe. And it is all kept rather mellow, and they flow pretty good too.

Is a 3" super turbo a 3" pass tube all the way through? I was thinking of putting one on my truck.

You can have good flow without horrible raspyness. :) Suki knows too.

You are correct. I've upgraded my mod list to things "reversible in a day"
LOL
I talked to the wife tonight about a blower on the MM instead of her Cobra. Yea...that didn't go so well. hahahahaha her car has to get blown first.
