I'm building a FFR Cobra replica and I have installed an 04 Marauder replacement engine. Just thought I would share it with you guys.
Since I've never owned a Marauder, I'd also like to know what you guys suggest to make more power with these engines. Bang for the buck approach please.
Kind Regards,
Tad

Looking good Tad! Another vote for a Trilogy. It is a well engineering kit, very compact, makes good power.
What will the finished car weigh? That will be a screamer!!

Beautiful! I have to agree a Trilogy with a good tune and you'll have 425+hp. Is the car going to be a MTX? If so you may want to beef up the internals as the Marauder engine is designed for a ATX. I would certainly go with a stronger oil pump and crank for MTX.

First time I have seen this choice.
In all honesty... these engines are heavy, dimensionally huge and create rather small numbers N/A.
I would have gone with a simple carb'd bigger displacement engine for this application but I can also respect the want to be original.
To answer your question... I would want to step this engine up where it needs it the most... low end TQ. A positive displacement S/C or a badass twin turbo setup should yield nice numbers down low.
Good luck with the project and I would really like to see some more pics and updates.

Turbo it. You'll have plently of room in the front.
A good friend had a FF with a turbo'd 302.

What is the total weight ?
What gears are you running ?
What tranny are you useing ?
What will you be useing the car for ?

The weight should be about 2200 lbs. It is set up with a 3.55 8.8 ford lsd independent rear suspension. I have a new T45 5 speed tranny. Aluminum flywheel. Using the mustang hydroboost power steering and brakes with the ABS. Rear tires are 315 35 17 and fronts are 275's.
There are actually quite a few FFR cars with the 4.6. Most are the sohc but some are the dohc engines from the cobras. Mine is the 1st Marauder I have seen. Got a deal on the crate engine off of ebay about a year ago. So...that is why its in there. Overall, I think the Marauder engine looks tough in there. I wanted modern engine and drivetrain with the classic looks. It should be fun.
As I understand it from others, typical performance for similar setups is approx high 3 to low 4 second 0-60 mph and low 12's in the quarter around 110mph. Those figures are for a basically stock dohc engine with a mild tune and cold air intake.
Thanks for the positive comments. I'll post more pics in the future as I get closer to completion.
Merry Christmas guys!

Make SURE you put power steering on it. My friends FF had 550rwhp and ran a 10.5 but ironicly couldnt' autox because he left it off. Smart huh? What the car would be the best at...it can't do.

289/302 small block engine weight: 460 Lbs.
351 Cleveland engine weight: 550 Lbs.
351 Windsor engine weight: 510 Lbs.
FE big block engine weight: 650 Lbs.
429/460 engine weight: 640 Lbs.
Aluminum block 4.6 modular engine weight: 425 lbs.
:dunno:
Can't argue the size, the 4 valve motors are big, but IMO it looks good in this installation.
What are considered "rather small numbers N/A"? Some of the N/A Marauders dyno at 300 rwhp, which probably translates into 340 - 350 hp at the flywheel. These are small numbers for a 281 cid engine? :dunno:

Hey Adam how much does your girlfriends mach weigh? I remember you saying they run 13's bone stock, imagine what this thing is gonna run N/A seeing how light it is. I say mid 11's if he can hook up.

Car and Driver got it down to 13.3 in the quarter....
Fastest ever recorded stock was 12.8.....
Curb wight of 3400lbs.
This info leads me to believe that your FFR Cobra will be.... "Hold on Snoopy" Fast. :snoopy:

Id put a novi non-intercooled on it with a mild pulley. You're talking half the money of a trilogy. The car will already have problems holding grip on the NA motor being only 2200lb.
With a novi NI, you won't have to find room for the intercooler A/A nor for the W/A cooler required by trilogy. Engine loads on this light car compared to the loads it's built for in the MM will make it less susceptible to heat issues.
Trilogy is notorious for low torque. I think the motor in this car is quite sufficient for low torque and would marry nicely to the carachter of a centrifugal.
Novi does not require an engine oil feed either.
Lastly, it looks like there's room on the front passenger side of that motor to put the head unit.
I honestly think that bang for the buck and ease of install and ease of ongoing maintenance, Novi NI is the answer.
What type of tire is that you're running?

I was surprised at the weight listed, too. Your link shows 475 lbs. for an s/c'd aluminator; does an s/c weigh 50 lbs? :dunno:
Anybody else have weight info they can share?

That 'S/C' Aluminator is without S/C.
The 'N/A' Aluminator (exact same engine except with a 10.1:1 CR) weighs the same 475Lbs.

Thanks for the clarification, Joe.
So all things considered, the 4.6 might be a touch lighter than a CI small block, but certainly not heavier, correct?
Joe Walsh
12-26-2008, 02:44 PM
Yep,
From what I read on the FRPP website an all aluminum 4.6 DOHC is about the same weight as an aluminum headed 302 V8.
If you step up to a 351W, especially a big stroker Windsor, you are at 500+ lbs easy.

Tad, run the stock MM motor until it's set up, runs well, has traction, broken in, too slow, on your 3rd tranny, 2nd rear end and your board, then talk to Joe Walsh about what direction to go in. Your car is so light very little power is needed for hair on fire performance and these cars are notorious for a light rear end and no traction and hop hop hop not a chance of hooking up, Joe and me see allot of these car every week at church and not many are as fun as they could be, a 6 banger in these cars is more fun because they hook up and rev to the moon verses a high HP V8 that steps out 45 degrees to the right every time you change gears up or down. It's easy to add power and it hurts to take it away when you payed big money for HP and went over board. look at the weight to power ratio you have right now. Tom

Update:
The Marauder powered Shelby Cobra replica is finally finished and I want to share some pics with you guys! Got it back from the painter, registered, and LEGALLY on the road last week. It is totally awesome and exceeded my expectations.
Build Details:
FFR Roadster with independent rear suspension, 3.55 lsd, power steering, ABS power brakes (13.0" front, 11.65" rear), T45 5 speed, AC, and of course the Marauder 4.6 DOHC. The power and driveability is awesome especially with all the modern features. I used a Telorvek panel to wire the engine EEC-V and sensors.
Check it out and give me some feedback:

Very well done sir!
In a car that light I wouldn't want to add a lot of weight to the front end. If you really feel the need for a lot more power go with the lightest forced induction you can find. Good luck and enjoy the ride!
PS - I just went up to the factory last fall - I was trying on a Daytona Coupe for size -it was a tight fit!

Looks tight under that hood! Good thing you picked a great reliable motor to put in there! You chose the right motor for the job. I have 120k on my marauder and the thing is still strong as hell! Have not touched anything besides standard maintenance items. That thing looks incredible and I bet it is a blast to drive! Have fun!
