I was told the other day by a Mercury tech that the reason there is a clunk noise whenever I coast the car and then give it gas it clunks, when I accel and then let off, it clunks.
I was told that its because of the "Brass Shift Rings" and that this is a known problem....
Is there such thing in the 4r70w trans?

Not sure about the brass rings but that sounds more like a bad universal joint.

Shifter blocking rings are made of brass and are only in manual transmissions. Hope this helps a little.

Maybe there's excessive backlash in the rear differential?

I hear the klunks too!
But it's only my brain rolling back and forth inside my head.

Thats what I thought as well, U joints are brand new, and installed correctly as well as the driveshaft was indexed. The rear is perfect, the clunk sounds like coming from trans...

I have the same sound and it has always been there, on mine it is just the backlash.

Sounds like it's time for a new service tech!!Agreed.
Also check the transmission crossmember bolts and the rubber mount.

Now the car is taking forever to go into reverse. or forward gear..
Like shifting from reverse to drive, it sits there can count till 5 till it engages.
its the same going into reverse.
is this a trait of the infamous 4r70w?

I believe it is a trait of a 4r70w that is about to lay down on you.

Clogged filter, low fluid, blocked passages, leaking actuator pistons or bad pump.
Combinations of any of the above - it's not normal.

I figured it wasn't normal due to the fact that it never did this when it was new....
then again, it was rear ended by a dump truck at 1800 when I owned it.
so could have mess somthing in the rear being forced foward, towards the trans... ?
I mean I can rebuild it, I have no problem with auto transmissions done em before. especially the 4r70w...
can I just get one out of a police version crown vic? I'm just gonna rebuild it anyway...

I believe it has to be from a Marauder or CVPI. The regular CV has a shorter tailshaft & housing.

cvpi? is that the intercepter package?

told by people when looking for my mm, try to get an 04, that they had a different trans, up-graded from the 03's.
one of the problems, was a clunk in the trans ! Of the 03's ?
at 80000, i had my 04 trans rebuilt, and new pump and plates
installed. "there is a different pump for the 04's" we found out when the parts came in, and had too wait for the newer pump...could be your problem ! Mind you, i said "could be".....hope this helps !!!

so wait a sec, the trans varied by year? but if the 04 was upgraded from 03, whatever they did for the "upgrade" was pointless if it was to eliminate the clunk.
