Well, went to the dealer for an oil change at 2,900 miles, and had them check the transmission as it hesitates from forward to reverse - naturally they couldn't find a thing wrong! Then what do they do - they WASH my already spotless car and leave water spots all over it - I was not a happy camper! They figured that out real quick! Had to come back home and spray the Zaino cleaner all over it again in 40 degree weather this was not fun!

Next time I TELL them NO WASHY!!!

Mine will periodically not engage reverse either, it seems to be a problem with the shift lever positioning.

I also hear from my better half that the car stays in neutral when she wants the transmission to be in reverse at times. I need to go under there and make an adjustment some day.

Hey Marsha, is your dealer Irwin Motors? I didn't think that the Lake Winnipesaukee water (distributed into the Laconia Water Works) caused much spotting. Of course, on black, I guess that any water would show.

So what are we to do about this reverse problem that dealers don't seem to know about? Should we contact Mercury direct or what?

Mike the water is as bad there at Irwins - maybe worse that mine in Meredith! By the way they have another Marauder on the floor - anyone interested see Scott Hayward, tell him I sent you.
Thank goodness for Zaino spray!

For those of you who are experiencing difficulty getting the car to shift into reverse from neutral (without having to push it all the way up forward against the shifter gate) I suggest that you request your dealer make an adjustment on the Transmission Shift Cable. There is an adjuster built into this cable near where it attaches to the transmission. You want the service person to adjust the cable so that reverse engages closer to the center of the shift gate. Once on a hoist, it is a 5-minute job for a service mechanic. After they adjust the cable for you, you can check the engagements into Park, Reverse, Neurtal, and OD from both directions to ensure that the shifter cable adjustment is centered to your satisfaction. This is easy to do right in the parking lot, with your foot firmly on the brake.

Thanks Brian. Too bad they don't just adjust it when we ask! Now I have to go back and ask AGAIN!
