View Full Version : Engine hitting Rev Limiter
Dennis;
My engine is hitting the rev limiter at WOT consistently, 6.5K RPM. Since I don't do a lot of WOT I only noticed it a couple of weeks ago. Prior to that the car seemed OK. I haven't changed anything in the tune or hardware.
Any suggestions as to why or recommendations as to what I should do?
Regards,
Reading the SCT Xcal2 instruction sheet I can purchase certain software upgrades that will allow my flasher to change many parameters.
So, I'm off to the SCT dealer in Atlanta, Texas and see about installing the upgrade.

You shouldn't have to purchase anything or any upgrades, it should alow you to do it. I can with my DR tune.
Just adjust the MPH for the WOT shifts in the hand held. Take em all down by 2-3mph.
Both my son and I tried but the screens are just not there. Instructions tells me to upload some software from the dealer.
I'll be driving the 60 miles to the dealer and let him load up the flasher with the software.
It's not the rev limiter that's the problem it's the 1-2 shift point, the RPM is going past where the car used to shift, 6.2k, and running smack dab into the limiter which is set at 6.5K RPM.
I just noted this two weeks ago. Prior to that time the car shifted 1-2 at 6.2K.

I always wondered why they have an MPH setting on the handhelds. Why wouldn't you just set the RPM point instead of MPH? I've never figured out the reason for that.

With temperature changes, and tire wear it is not unusual for this to happen, what you do is just lower the WOT shift points by about 500 RPM I will send you a file out to correct this.

Isn't the point of the tune to allow you to shift at about redline? I understand some might be intimidated by this, but can't you just let off the gas for a bit before it shifts?

If you have user oitions you can make some changes your self. if you let up on thre pedal you will loses time, so just dial in in and let it rip.
I don't have user options on my XCal2 so I can't make any changes.
However, it may be, after reading some threads in the garage's Tuning Forum, an incompatibility between the timing of the shifting events. The problem occurs mainly on the 1-2 shifts and intermittently on the 2-3 shifts.
I will have to go to an SCT tuner that can check or change the relationship of the two events, refer to thread "questions about trans functions".

You are spending to much time pondering this Pat.
The 1-2 shift needs to be lowered by 1-2 mph, or the rev limiter increased by 200rpm.
The problem will go away once it warms up outside.
