I was wondering if it is possible to hollow out the catalytic converters on a marauder instead of cutting them off n running straight pipes?

You have to cut them out to hollow them out, so its easiest just to replace them with straight pipe.

I was askin because the shop that jus did my exhaust said that's what they did with my two cats closest to the intake n they did it to keep the o2 emsors in them and I had never heard of that before so I was jus makin sure it was possible

I've had all four of mine replaced with straight piping. The first set were far more of a pain for many reasons:

the O2 sensors being there, and subsequently I don't think they were mounted identically across the two flow paths.

the physical position in the undercarriage was a pain, luckily these were flanged onto the manifolds though so the hard part was getting the bolts un-stuck.

You can definately keep the O2s on with the cats not there though, you should in fact be doing that as the first set of O2s is the important set. The second pair, not so much, as they can be disabled with a tune (e.g. lidio tune.) Keep in mind the volume will increase dramatically between removing the second set alone and removing all four, and in my case in particular it smells to all hell and back of a drag strip because of the exhaust fumes having no real emissions control on them any longer.

Only benefit i'd see for gutting them vs. replacing them with straight pipes is if inspection bothers to look at your undercarriage and notice that there are sections of welded-in pipe instead of cats and you don't get passed.

If you hollow out the cats you may also hear the exhaust "banging" around inside the cats.

I've "emptied" a lot of Ford cats over the years starting with my '78 T-Bird - no "banging" encountered. Maybe the "banging" cats weren't completely cleaned out?

Any CAM members,
This is one of many MODS I’m considering. Will this affect my MM when it is time for emissions in MD?
