This thread is in response to the coment DR made about Manufactures are required to offer parts(tires), ten years from the time of production.
I always thought there was a law on the books regarding this issue.
I also thought the number was smaller (8)

I'm still waiting some form of printed material from DR showing us that he is correct other than:
His first post:
This is a fact they have to make parts for ten years after the OEM date I called my friend at the FHP to see if they have any
My reply:
Actually that is not a fact. In my time with Lincoln/Mercury I've spoken with some pretty big wigs, and I was told it's an urban legend.
I've never seen it in writing..........Have you ??
DR's edited reply
Well I respect your opinion and I will explain what I know for facts
My edited reply:
A manufacturer has the obligation to have parts available to repair cars while they are still under factory warranty. In the case of the 1996 Mark VIII if I remember correctly that was 4yrs/50,000 miles at that time so naturally Ford has to have service parts available.
In any event as I asked you in my 1st post, do you have any printed material from Ford or the government to back your claim up? If yes then please post it for us all to see.
I urge everyone to refer to the original thread http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=51142
instead of this cut-up version, and read thru it to inorder to more understand my frustration.
Sorry for the long winded http://www.crownvic.net/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/default/540567-rant.gif

I work at a Tier 1 supplier for Ford Motor Company supplying drivetrain components.
When I was in the Quality department, the standard for "Service" part availablility was 10 years after that part was no longer OEM.
We had to stock parts and build them as "Service" for that duration of time.

I've worked in Lincoln Mercury and Ford dealers parts depts. for 39 years. It is a urban legend that they have to make parts for 10 years. They must be available while the car is under warranty, that's it. I've seen so many parts go obsolete way before 10 years.

I took me TWO MONTHS to get a driver's side seat skin under warranty since it is a Vendor "made to order" part......we had to make A LOT of noise to even get it in that time frame!!!:mad2:
This "Economy" will surely make all parts harder to find since "Vendors" are dropping by the wayside and manufacturers are concentrating on new products, cutting costs and SURVIVAL!!!:help:

Thank you for speaking up, I thought that I was the only one. :) I was a short timer compared to you with only 18 years with F/L/M.
I posted the below quote in the BFG thread.

Add an ABS Module for a 99 F150 to that list. We don't need no stinkin' brakes.

+1 on that glad youre back Ray!!!! and you are 100% correct Ray,of course being a parts guy, they have to furnish parts while under Warranty. After that ??? they can obsolete whenever, per a Ford Rep it is all supply and demand kinda like that SVT Contour part obsolete due to very little demand when parts were gone on something like that they were gone. Thats were the aft co's step in again depending on S&D. Kinda like me buying 4- new Marauder center caps last month & the month before that buying a drivers leather seat cover along with another member here in St Louis who I got a drivers seat cover for as well.My Seat is not bad but??? I have been stocking up on Marauder parts who knows when they will be gone?

I remember in the early 90's that many of the Merkur parts were gone. I liked the Scorpio it was a car ahead of it's time.

Yup, everything is going cable-less to wire feed.
I posted this on the DR thread that he was in crack to compare our situation with tires to the headlights on the marks! First off the headlight issue was within 3 years of the cars being made, making it an issue of the 3yr 36,000 mile warrenty. We are thousand of miles over that and coming up on 6-7 yrs!!! Even if you bought a new car and the tire co went under noone will back that under warraty, tires and such are supposed to wear out and be replaced, they are not a warrantied part so there is no standard on them.

Also, the MarkVII as do all Lincolns carry a 4 year, 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, not the 3-36 like the Mercurys and Fords.
