Got it mostly apart. Im down to needing to remove the impeller, which will get me at the last bearing and inner seal. Im pretty sure I will be able to bypass this because those parts are not bad.
Actually, I think maybe, just maybe Dominick lucked out on this deal.
I have spun all the bearings and most inportantly felt them while I spun them, and found one and only one bearing that was noticeably bad.

The bearing in question rides on the impeller shaft and seats on the back case. It grinds when spun and has a lot of play in it. Every other bearing is dirty, but sounds and feels good.
I can get this bearing for pretty cheap at NAPA and have this thing back together fairly soon.

The fact that doing this and re-installing the blower back on the car is not hard work compells me to just go with my gut, replace the one bearing and see what happens.

If that doesn not fix the noise, It will have to go in for professional rebuilding.
Enjoy the pics.

Thanks for the pics Zack...

I've always wondered if I could re-build it myself...

Scratch getting the bearing cheap at NAPA, that is just a plain Jane ball bearing not rated for high speed.
The bearing I need is only sold in sets of 2 and are $200

Going to ebay now!

Nice pics. What does the gear in the upper right do? even out the force on the impeller gear?

I think that is the 'oil splash' gear...for lubricating the other gears.

I seee... that does make more sense than my only idea, right or wrong

Probably explains the $500 factory rebuild.

Just a thought; but there were steel pieces-parts floating around in the oil bath along with the aluminum, and running along in the bearing races. Why would you take a chance and not replace all the bearings, since it's off the vehicle and already apart?

Zack, are the innards supposed to be that dark? Or is the oil they use really dark...full of graphite or something? Or is the dark colour a result of the failure/lack of maintenance or something else?

There were no pieces of metal gloating around, just metallic oil!

At this point, a rebuild kit is in order, just waiting on Dominick to wake up.

No, its not supposed to look like that inside!

This is one reason I'm a big fan of blowers that re-circulate the oil.

I did have a Vortech go bad on me once though. The bearing LOCKED up. Man what a horrible sound to drive home. It was when I'd just got it and was "professionally rebuilt" Turns out Vortech never had it to be rebuilt.

I sold it for 400$ and found a brand new head unit for 800$.

Ok, just got off the phone with Todd @ Supercharger Rebuilds.com.
Super nice guy and helpful.
I explained the situation and he said its common for one of the 2 Impeller shaft bearings to go when its run low on oil.
He explained its almost always the one I suspect to be bad.
So... I ordered the bearing for $100 and I will thoroughly clean the blower and reassemble it.

Best part is, if the noise persists, he said he will deduct the cost of the bearing if we send it in to him for a complete rebuild.

Sounds like a deal to me!

I am awake now!!! Literally!

Zack thanks so much for doing all of this and I spoke to Todd myself last week. Sounds like a great guy and that is one heck of a deal.

Now I owe Zack a big favor, but he won't tell me what to do. :(

Alright well I have to go out the Marauder back together right now and share lunch with my mom.

I cannot wait to be back on the road. Heck I might wanna take the Marauder down the track as is and see what it runs N/A.... but only if it's safe.

Drewstang watch out, I might be back in business before you know it.

I have been spinning the other bearing for hours now and think it may need help as well.
Changing the other one is beyond my capabilities.
I recommended just sending it in to be rebuilt so the guessing game will be non-existent.

Im such a tease to Dominick, its a good thing he's so understanding.

I sometimes take shortcuts on my own car, but I just cant do it on someone else's.

is your blower a self lub unit or do you have your oil pan taped?

It has it's own oil. I broke a few belts and this caused oil to leak out without me even realizing it. I knew some leaked out so I just filled it some more. That oil leaked out again and now I have this mess. I was told to change it every 10,000 miles according to the owners manual. Another source says every 3,000 miles and now a lot are labeling me as a dumbassssss because it ran out of oil. If they only knew the fully story before a judgement. :shake:

Dom, don't take this the wrong way...but those comments probably stem from some prior admissions you have made about your continuing vehicular problems.
I probably wouldn't check the blower oil very often myself...unless it had leaked previously or there was evidence of oil leaking onto the engine.

BTW: Congrats on helping out the site!

Good point, we all learn through trial and error, but poor Doms learning costs him and arm, leg and soul. Dom keep chugging along, things will look up soon and now you know to watch the oil levels all over the car better

Bob,

The black inside the blower is a special sprayed on "Moly Disufide" coating that erodes ever so slowly to ensure the parts not only have oil lubrication but a constant amount of additional lubrication protection with the Moly as the coating breaks down!!:bows:

When I learned this I decided a rebuild by ProCharger was in order!!

Maybe Todd can shed light on this but I know the coating is still in mine (47K miles since rebuild) as it smells pretty rough and tints the oil dark when I drain it (normally the oil is light blue)!!

If it were me I'd send it to PC...they warrant their work for 90 days I think??

Good job tearing it apart Zack and thanks for the pix!!

i know crap happens sometimes but i change my oil in my Vortech every 6500 miles 2500 miles for the first change when you get yours rebuilt i would follow these guide lines to be safe i think 10,000 is to long between changes especially if your beat,n on it all the time lol
